I have a 2001 P38 vogue 4.6 with a gas conversion. The sat nav doesn't work. The unit takes in the dvd and tries to read it three times and then spits it out. Admittedly the disc looks as though it has been skated on. The screen in the cabin lights up but remains white. Should the screen give me more if the unit is working or does the disc need to be in good condition in order for the screen to display anything. To that end, where can I get a new disc relatively cheap?

The screens go white when they are scrambled! May need replacing but check plugs behind and on the player! The player can be serviced, there is a guy in Birmingham that services them for about £100 and throws in a new disc. Did a cracking job on mine.

If you have a UK contact who can service and flash the sat nav computer please post it, it's worthwhile having it available to all.

If the battery is disconnected before the sat nav drive in the trunk has powered down it can and often does wipe the flash memory.

Mine had suffered that when i bought the car, it took a lot of scrabbling around trying to find someone re-flash it, which i couldnt, or the alternative to purchase a replacement drive unit / computer.

Bought myself a BMW unit off e-bay. Its not compatible really, however it did work and showed a map. The interface is really out dated which made me decide not to bother replacing it. I have a free map app on my phone, which works well. BMW unit back on e-bay. Tom-Tom and Garmin do a much better job and are bang up to date.
