right, due to yet another result on ebay, i know have yer actual Land Rover auxiliary wiring kit for my S5K's and, having spent many hours decoding the instruction manual, have resolved to try wiring the things up myself

only thing is, the instructions don't actually say how the things will operate once i've finished, so will they:

a) be entirely independent of the high beam operation as controlled by the steering column stalk, and be turned on or off (as in actually illuminated) solely by the "new" dashboard switch i will have, which - if it is the case - is crap

b) will the dash switch, in effect, be a power on/off switch for the S5K's, as in it'll switch them to "standby mode" for want of a better phrase, but they will still need the high-beam stalk operated to actually turn them on or off - by this i mean that if i have the dash switch "on" the S5k's will then illuminate and turn off in tandem with my normal high-beam headlights, and if i have the dash switch "off", they will remain off regardless of what i do with the stalk ? this would strike me as a far more sensible way of working

sorry - this is all probably extraordinarily obvious to most people, but i have long since engaged cretin mode when it comes to car-related electronics - thank you for your patience !

by the way, handy hint if you are ever looking for lamp related goodies on e-bay, make your search general rather than specific, as both the spare stone guards and the wiring kit i picked up were wrongly listed as being for safari 3000 lamps, which meant that they were a lot cheaper than they would have been if they'd be correctly listed, and obviously i'd have missed them both if i had put "5000" in as a search term

If you wire the relay correctly the feed from the highbeam "switches" the relay and allows the fused connection from the battery to illuminate the lamps. if you fit a dash board switch (not necessary) it is merely an extension of this wire but you then you have the option of whether to have the lamps on or off when highbeam is on. But the high beam has to be on for the lamps to operate,

thanks redhand, that's how i want them to work, but when you say "wired correctly" does that mean as per the standard guidlines for fitting the kit i have - i'd imagine that is the case, as it's far and away the most sensible way for the things to operate.....
