Just had the MOT center in touch with me.
Sad day as i have to let my d2 td5 2004 go to landrover heaven as the rear chassis is beyond repair.
The guy who welded it last year said hed have it for £450 but doesnt realy want it as he already has 3 in his field, goin to take the £450 i think.
Currently looking for a runaround now.

yes, rotten around the body, airbag and shock mounts both sides.
The guy who did my welding last year deals only with landrovers and he said he would scrap it as it will need the fuel tank out and all sorts of new chassis parts to fit.

Wonder if you could flog it to a welderer as a rear half chassis isn't that expensive. How many miles has it done?
you could just sticj it on gumtree as an MOT failure, be honest about the state of it and put pics up.
You never know and it costs nothing to find out. ;)
 
it's on Gumtree now, just posted but no pics.
It's a lovely car apart from the rear chassis runs smooth no bangs or clunks from gear box and strats instantly on the key.
no body rot at all.

Repair it, good condition ones going up in value.

I had some patch welding which involved tank out 3 years ago, under £200.

Looking at whole chassis before too long.

2004 is pretty new as well.

Must admit this is what I'd do. And for exactly the same reasons
The bloke who patched mine, about three years agao, and he had to take the tank out too, (£240 inc VAT) quoted me £700 for supplying and fitting a rear chassis.
I doubt it owes the OP anything. What is he going to get for £450?

And if you can find anyone to weld it properly you might be at the very least the same again, then while your at it , replace the shox / brake pipes / rear section of the exhaust .... etc etc .. Budget at least £2500.. We all go into these things with out rose tinted specs on and soon its consumed you . But a good repair done properly would be worth it .. can you find a good solid D2 that your familiar with that would be solid for a few years to come for £2500 that's the question.

I take your point, but if it will pass the MOT with just the chassis redone, he can save his dosh up to do the other bits mentioned at a later date, under no pressure.
But then I 'm tight.

Don't know if being born in Hull has anything to do with that!;):):D
 
Very sad, that you can't have a runaround for a few weeks whilst fixing the rear chassis!

Took me a couple of weekends to fix full rear chassis?

Total cost was 700 chassis and 80 + case of Real Ale for welder??

With a new chassis going on in a couple of years!!

I was told that welding in a new part chassis is a lot easier than patching a rubbish one. But it's the dismantling and remantling that takes the time/money.:(:(

I’m not seeing that much work there. Shocks and springs off. Tank out. Tow bar off. Body mounts out times 4 by the looks of it. Anything else attached to the chassis like brake lines etc. clean cuts and it’s off. I did weld up mine using repair plates and it was a lot of cutting and welding. Welding gas ain’t cheap now, and if I had to do it again it would be the half chassis for sure.
 
Stanley your correct its a lot easier to replace than patch, I agree it's a pain to take the tank out when I did mine the tank was full. but a local garage gave me a new empty 200ltr steel drum, so I managed to save 95% of a full tank of fuel, the removal I did in 3 bits rear cross member them the rear side member and a final measure a cut to fit and weld the new section in, all done in 3-4 day at the tender age of 70, plus new rear brake pipes, as for welding gas I stopped using BOC, a I had to pay cylinder rental every year, I now use Hobby weld. 3000psi cylinder with it own regulator a onetime fee for the cylinder no annual fee, with a refund of 90% if you want to return the cylinder

there are some good repair chassis out there, I do take on welding jobs so any one close only need to contact me even if all the need is look over and advice on the best way to resolve a problem,

No offence but if somebody is up to get rid of his D2 for small money due to some rust instead of fixing it should be banned from Landyzone which IMO is for enthusiasts... that's the satement of somebody who've just imported this from UK not long ago https://richardschassis.co.uk/Land-Rover-Discovery/ for big money and paid enough to be fitted, dont ask me how much cos i'll not tell it in public as my wife could read this and i can't afford a divorce too :cool:

As you live not too far away from me I will really bear this kind offer in mind. :):):)
I haven't done any welding for a longish time now, but I too will be going for Hobbyweld. I even know a pro LR indy who uses it. :):):)
And it is nice to have my welder's opinion seconded. ;)

As above! If I was not working during the week? The whole job would have taken 3 days possibly 2 if it was not for the Coffee, Bacon sarnies and general chit chat .
I'm not a mechanic! But as Landrover has said: making drivers into mechanics since 1948!?

Hope you may of changed your mind since seeing the replies on this post?

Hi Stanley I still get plenty of welding practices, working on my 'Flintstone' 1967 Morris Minor 1000, Im currently on wheel 3 of 4, cutting out 3 layers of plating over rot, an aircraft pining my bits in to make sure they fit after making them welded inside an out
