i found play on the steering where it passes through the front of the chassis vertically on to i suppose you would call the first steering drop link??, i dont know what the fook to call it, so rather than phoning landrover and going errrrr its that doodah thats connected to the thingumyjig i thought i would pick you lots brains! :D

The steering relay? IF the old one will come out without a struggle it's a fun rebuild or a cheap replacement. If it doesn't come out you can rebuild them in situ, will need new shaft, spring, fibre bushes and seals. Or you can buy a new one and swap the bits, it's probably cheaper.

wud it be this?

dont need to do one, just curious, regards the bfo spring inside 'em.

bfo? big feck off? ive never been in aboot one but when i am ill try and get some pictures and maby try a how to guide
yup.
have heard there pretty nasty if they fly out.
never had the need to open one, but do know when you gas axe
the chassis a bit too close to them the oil burns like feck too.....

and a mate resorted to lifting the front of his motor up on a chain block tied to the bumper with a bit of rope, tacking a 2 foot length of scaff pipe to the bottom of the relay, then cutting the rope to drop the weight of the landy onto the scaff to get the relay out. crude but it worked.....

The works manual has a good guide to overhauling them - the spring does come out with a bang but I contained mine in an old coffee tin. Complete units are quite cheap but see various threads about BP. They usually run out of oil, the shaft wears/corrodes and then eats the fibre bushes.

I tried everything to remove mine - ended up rebuilding it in the chassis. Eventually I kept the relay and replaced the chassis!
