Per title really. Disco 2 is now running well after a pretty big spend so no its onto maintaining its condition (if it ever stops raining)

Plan A was to paint the chassis with zinc primer followed by a coat of hammerite smooth

This will be fairly laborious and far from cheap so I am wondering whether using waxoil sprayed on all over may be a lot easier/cheaper and as effective?

I have a compressor and spray gun and was inteding to get inside the box sections in any case.

Any thoughts, experience with either (or even a better method)?

If there is surface rust on the chassis then I would strip it with a wire brush and then paint it followed by Waxoyl. However if you are still on the original chassis paint and it hasn't started to flake just waxoyl should be fine.

It's worth borrowing a steam cleaner over a normal pressure washer as they clean the oil off much better. :D

Just did all the underside of my disco with Underbody Seal made by Hammerite. Its a brush on, and goes semi hard, so a lot tougher than just waxoyling. I used the waxoyl sprayer to get inside the chassis and any parts I could not reach with the brush..
I powerwashed to start with, then scraped and wire brushed.
Dirty nasty job, but def worth doing..

I am lucky enough to have found a Disco 1 with a very solid chassis, only a couple of spots with surface rust but 99% looks like its a year old with shiny black original paint even round the drain holes.

I plan to steam clean it all up then I am looking for the best method to keep it like it is for many years to come, so interested in what ideas this thread throws up.

I want something to neutralize any rust that might be there, especially inside the chassis , and give it a strong layer that will last for years.

If I go green laning or off roading I normally finish the day at a well known ford near me.

Always 2ft deep and leaves the underside mud free. :)

I was told you had to be careful waxoyling the inside of box sections, as it can catch fire if being welded, is this a myth or is there any truth in the comment.

I just had my 1999 Disco TD5 treated by Rustmaster in Hatfield for £470 (special April offer)
They steam clean underside, then dry and then spray all over with Waxoyl.

The rear section of the chassis had quite a bit of surface rust, though no holes yet. Everything else looked pretty good. Was a bit anxious about just covering up over old rust but was assured that waxoyl has "inhibitors" and it was fine........if that was bull**** then I'll let you know in a year or so!!

Have to say that they were pretty efficient and helpfull and it is a filthy job that I really did not want to get involved with myself.
