Running Cold - PLEASE HELP

Hi All,

New DSE 1997 2.5 Range Rover Owner.

I know its a bit chilly at the moment, BUT temperature gauge isn't getting much above cold (Blue marker) and I am getting little heat into the cab.

Is it likely to be the thermostat or is it something else??

How easy it it to change the thermostat??

check you heater pipes if hot nowt wrong with thermostat,more likely the blender motors are us,if you decide to change em do the pollen filters as well,they usually block and put the motors under strain they were never designed for,,,,they are a,p,i,t,a, to get at but if you do a search on here and the net there are some good short cuts ....hope this helps dave
 
I wouldnt worry, they all run cold. Heating in the P38 has never been the best, and with these temps i can do 50 miles before the needle moves.

take the fan blades off the engine.you dont need em really cos these engines run a bit cold anyway.
 
hi ,, i changed the themostat , and mine still runs cold , but it improved the heat inside ,, local dealer says its normal for p38 to run cold ,, change pollin filters too , hope this helps you ,,

Mine runs with the guage mid way even when it's very cold, just takes longer to get there. I reckon the stat is your problem. If the engine is running cold it's not good for it or for fuel economy. Surprisingly perhaps, it will run hotter with the aircon on as the condensor is in front of the rad and gets quite hot even in cold weather.

The Stat is a pretty easy job to change, did mine yesterday, ya best bet is to pump yer suspension up and open a door so it won't go back down, that way you'll have plenty of room underneath, it's located at the bottom right of the rad facing back towards the cab, a bit fiddly but not to bad, i replaced the spring hose clips with jubilee type but watch doing them back up as it's only plastic and ya don't wanna crack it.
Remember 50/50 water antifreeze to go back in, i think the system holds 11 liters in total..

Thanks all, yeah I am tending to think its thermostat. It did start to heat up (Needle moved off of cold) then dropped back down, but many stays in the blue. As soon as we try and get heat into the cab, drops even further, which makes me think the heater matrix is fine (Old trick if your fan failed or running hot was to run the heater on full blast just to get home !!)

Think I am going to do the thermostat, does this forunm have any 'How Tos'??

Download RAVE, it's the P38 bible. All the info you could want:D
 
I'm inclined to go for the stat as well, 'cos my needle barely moves either, even after many miles AND the fan is removed (Kenlow electric), BUT, the heaters chucking out loads even after a half-mile or so.

If the heater is hot but the guage doesn't move, could be a duff sensor for the guage or a bad earth to the guage:D
