Evening all, planning on doing a few bits on the Range over one of the upcoming bank holidays
  • A/C Condenser - is holed and really want to get this in order before the warmer weather is here
  • Auxiliary Belt - Seen better days and has a few hairline cracks appearing in the belt
  • Thermostat - Bit temperamental and seems to be getting stuck open. Sometimes the car gets up to temperature perfectly and the gauge sits at '12 noon' but other times barely gets off cold. Only gets off blue when going up hill or accelerating hard.
Planning on doing all this in one hit, got the workshop manuals at the ready. If anyone has any tips or tricks they have found useful or anything I should look at replacing at the same time it would be great to hear.

Joe

I've got a petrol without the condenser attached so assuming things are mostly the same I will be watching with anticipation on how it goes for you and any tips and tricks you might come up with on your own so I can be ready to tackle it.

Thanks, I’ll take a few photos along the way!

I’ve persuaded my best mate who works as a mechanic at an Audi main dealer to give me a hand, don’t think he’s looking forward to it

I got a genuine Hella air-con condenser off AllParts at a good price some time ago.

Aux belt is easy but gently-Bentley on the tensioner - slow and steady pressure with a big screwdriver. Do the aircon belt at the same time but beware there are a few sizes.

Thermostat is easy. Check the water pump has a metal impellar at the same time. Valeo stats are OK.

Later condensors are not available but earlier ones will fit but a bit of metal chopping required and a new condensor hose.

Thanks for the advice. Looking forward to getting these few bits done. Did you find you had to take the front bumper off? Heard reports of some being able to manage without resorting to this?

Still got to get a new sunroof, new offside front lower ball joint, rear speakers/sub and fix the front heated seats, all in good time... getting there slowly but surely!

I only know fitting early condensor to late car and the bumper, slam panel and grill needs removing. Front bumper removal is easy, it's the rear that causes issues. How DEEP or HIgh is your existing condensor?

Mine has the early style condenser, runs from the top of the bay right down the front. My chassis number is XA and I believed LR changed it from YA?

For condenser? Don't recall having to remove the bumper, just the grill but mine's an early manual diesel if that makes any difference. I reinstated the plastic wind deflectors at the sides at the same time. My local indy sucked out any remaining gas for me before I started and then vacced it all out, leak tested it and recharged it afterwards.
