I am moving to the USA in a couple of months. I am considering buying a Discovery 2, on the basis of better the devil you know.

Had a bad experience with a RR 4.0 last year and from what I can see most Discos in the US have the same engine or the 4.6.

Do these suffer the same overheating problems, or where they sorted for warmer climates?

Thanks

I run a US spec 4.6 over here. Its 40 degrees here in the mountains in summer. Never had any temp related issues. maintainance just like UK. I use a top grade oil, but apart from that no worries. The only issue I have is the aircon. It works hard in the heat and despite being properly charged and maintained only just manages to win the battle despite privacy glass fitted to all rear windows. They are slight under achievers as far as engine size to power. I am told its because California has an incredibly strict emmissions law so the engine is catted to death to allow them to be sold there. I may one day de catt it if I can find the right part ! Spares are a problem here, but I guess you would be OK over there. Mine is an 03MY and nothing standard seems to fit, so it all OEM main dealer because it was never sold in Spain.
Apart from those small points its an awesome beast, if you can afford the petrol.

Good to hear, they are pretty good value in the US, and look a good alternative to some of the local produce.

Has anyone tried the waterless coolants in the V8? Do they run any better?

Where in the states you moving to. The area you move to will depend if a Disco is a good choice.

It doesn't matter what you use. The first thing you need is a good efficient cooling system. Water wetter or waterless coolant won't help blocked rads or a dodgy thermostat. If you were to replace the entire cooling system, you wouldn't notice any difference. A new race engine, now maybe.

done a quick look and lots are saying the cooling system need to be modified from stock to work properly. different water pumps with a higher flow rate is just one thing needed

moving to Florida.

on the waterless coolant it is advertised in several classic car magazines, just wondered if anyone had first hand experience.

go with a lower temp thermostat then,

Was looking at the info on the waterless stuff and was mentioned a different water pump with higher flow rate.

But a 50/50 mix will do you good. or 60/40...... 40% being water. Here in the US there seems to be less of a over heating problem than in UK. There are several on here with v8's and they don't have the problems as you do in the UK.

On live above 5000 feet and that will tax a cooling system and he has no problem. You will be just fine.

I have the E2 visa interview next Friday and, all being well, should also be moving to Florida by the end of this month. Where are you going to live? I am considering a V8 Disco to replace the Dodge Charger that I am currently running over there.
I wish I could take the 300tdi but she's got another 7 or 8 years until she's eligible for the 25 year old regs.
If there is enough left to import.

There are a few of my mates over here who use a product called water wetter instead of the standard 50/50 coolant mix. They swear by it and just run this and water in there systems.
