Ok, be gentle with me please ! I am a real newbie to both Defenders and electrics etc

My reverse light on my defender 110 station wagon is absolutely RUBBISH ! I can't see diddly-squat when reversing in the dark, so I need to fit an extra light of some sort.

Thinking sensibly (hard for a blonde female !), I'd quite like a light which isn't wired to the reverse gear as would like the opportunity to be able to use it when not in reverse as a work light etc, so presumably need a switch.

First things first, how do I fix the light to the back of my pride & joy ?
What kind of light is best ? Guessing I want a flood rather than spot ?
Any recommendations as to best-buy etc ?
How do I fit it/connect it ?

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated, thanks !

Can't recommend a brand of light as I haven't yet used a work lamp. If it were me I would use a 3 position switch so you could have it "on" "off" or "on with reverse light". I'm sure someone will be along with a recommended work lamp but give an idea of budget so people know what to suggest. :) hope I helped a little

I'd get yourself a LED light from ebay there's loads to choose from and wire it into an illuminated switch on the dash. No need for relays as LED lights only draw a small current.

Being female and blonde is no excuse, there's plenty my wife can that I can't, like win an argument:D

Easy way, fit and wire up a high mounted work light, then run a wire from the original reverse light to the work lamp so when reverse engaged it also fires up the work lamp, this way the work lamp will also work on its own on switch.

I got something like this Linky mounted high on the back of mine, as well as a flood light.

Wiring in is no problem as all you need is an illuminated switch on your dash and a single bit of wire out to it.

I didn't have any problems earthing them as the earths connect locally to the body using the mounting bolts.

I wouldn't connect through the reversing switch, as that increases the load on the switch and involves extra wiring ... something else to go wrong ;)

I fitted a NAS spec reverse light which look much better than those oblong ones, with a standard 21w lamp (as intended) that is a serious light - the optics are much better and it really gives a lot of light. The old oblong thing was like a torch with dead batteries.

Get a genuine one, cheapy ones have bad lamp holders which melt.

I can use it as a work light - ignition on - select reverse gear - you can also wire an override to it so you can switch it independently.

I bolted mine through the hard top, above the gutter on the RH side of the vehicle. Rather than having to run an extra wire through to the dash to get power, some lights have their own on/off switch. I used my reversing light power feed without any problem, the combined power draw is still quite small, provising you stick to a low power buld/leds.
