Rubbing down paintwork

Quick one this.

According to the all-knowing haynes manual any paintwork /rust that needs rubbing down on the aluminium bits can't be done using a wire brush, a nylon rubbing pad must be used instead!

What do you folks use?

wet a dry paper. simple

wet and dry , or nitromorse if the lots got to come off, then wash it down
