Some of you may remember I posted a question about odd symptoms I had with the ABS on my '91 Classic. Well, hopefully the following tale may save somebody some hassle.

So, the brake pedal would be soft and spongy then it would be firm and pin sharp, no ABS warning lights coming on. Had a occassional warning light indicating air gap too large on front right, but turning ignition off then back on would sort it, so thought just another glitch.

After deciding the brakes are sort of important I consulted the workshop manual, it suggested the symptoms were indicative of master cylinder failure. Made sense at the time, so got a second hand one off fleabay and spent a while wrestling it in, then the fun begins, bleeding the ABS.

Bled the system, pump didn't take as long to pressurise the system so looking good. Drove it, problem still there:confused2: Then there was a sticking calliper, so decided I would change all the brake pads and be done with it. So, started with front left, no problem. Front right, took out pads and the hub/disc assembly just flopped down....mmmmm. You guessed it, wheel bearings completely gubbed. Why I didn't think of that I have no idea.

So the moral of this tale is if your brake pedal can't make up its mind, check your wheel bearings:doh:
