Hi Guys,

Im new to this forum and to Land Rovers but im thinking of selling my D4D Toyota Landcruiser GX and buying a Mk III Rangie, ideally a 02/03 TD6. However, ive heard they give all sorts of hassle from xenon headlights to gearbox issues, diff issues and the good old Air Suspension. What im wondering is is this exaggerated mostly or are they as troublesome as people make out, the other alternative is a 3.0d X5 from the same era. I will be mapping the Td6 engine and doind a few other mods but these wont affect the reliability as they will be cosmetic (Larger rims, some shiny bits! :D ).

Thanks guys,
Ben

oh right, so is there any Mk 3 owners on here? Do you know if there is any other UK based forums that would have many mk3 owners on it? I have found rangerovers.net but appear to be mainly US owners, a lot of the issues dont seem to be very relevant.

I dont own one,(glad about that.)but I run a LR garage so I see what goes wrong.Took a gearbox out of a 2004 TD6 this morning with 86k,and its on its 3rd engine. This is about the worst one I've seen, some are liitle trouble, others are a pain.
Engines, gearboxes, transfer box motors, rear suspension bushes, hevac ecu's,water leaks, door mirrors, seat trim injectors, fuel pumps and boost hoses.Other than that they are OK.(Remember I only see the bad ones.)

Thanks very much for that, I did work experience in a LR Main Dealer here before i did my trade ( BMW Mech.) and we did a gearbox on a 6wk old Mk III on my first day. Im not too worried about the engine as im well aware of issues with that and are ok to look after. I am amazed though that Land Rover are making 4x4's for generations and cant seem to make a 100k Euro 4x4 with Diffs and gearboxes that wont implode.

Are parts easily attainable/expensive? I obviously will be doing any work on it myself, especially mechanical stuff, as i dont have any LR fault gear i wont be able to do some of the tricky electrical stuff but theres no point me doing a front diff if its 2 grand for parts.

Thanks again for the reply,
