Rotate a rear wheel

Hi all,

probably doing something wrong but having a blonde moment or coming down with man flu

My offside rear wheel occasionally gets hot, have searched forum and come up with either sticking brake caliper or wheel bearing - wanted to see if wheel rotated freely and to see if there was any wobble - jacked her up with auto box in neutral with handbrake off but could not rotate wheel - am i missing something ? what am i doing wrong ?

yr2000 4.0l petrol
