Hi, could anyone tell me why my 1988 defender 110, 3.5ltr v8 petrol keeps eating up rota arms? It has the semi electronic ignition. If used a lot or towing it will sometimes get through 1 a day!
I've tried all different makes, including genuine LR ones & they all last about the same time. Once a new ones on it runs/ pulls perfect. Its driving me insane & my other half is threatening to sell it because of it!
Any help would be much appreciated x

Like James says^^^^^^^^. Most likely other parts putting dirty current into the works. If it has a capacitor, try a new one, cap likewise if you haven't already. Sorry, not very familiar with the exact system you have.

You would be crazy to sell that, they are a lovely vehicle. Not a Defender either, they weren't made then, just a One Ten.

Is it a factory V8, or one that has been fitted later?

Tried a new cap, yes it's the original factory fitted engine. Will have a look for a capacitor when I eventually get towed home lol
Thank you

Try and find out a bit more about the ignition system, and see if you can post any info about how it works.
If you can't find out what is causing the problem, I could come down and have a look at it. I remember you posting up before, flatlander helped you out with some parts, think it was a door glass.
I am only up the road from you if you need a hand.

Yes I did, that was fir my daughters 90 lol
I'll take some photos once I'm home if that would help.
Would you really come & look? How nice are you! I'm near Bungay now, are you close?

Have a read through the link I posted, see if you can make any sense of it. There are capacitors. It says that a good sign of capacitor failure is radio interference, and that they are fairly cheap for diagnostic change.

I am in mid Norfolk at the moment, my memory was that you were near Norwich. I will look up where Bungay is. My wife would be also be interested to look at your vehicle.

Just thought I'd let you know that I tried a rota arm from the "Distributor doctor" that I found online. He guarantee's his rota arms for 5 years & after the "genuine" ones from Land rover barely lasted 5 hrs I thought id give it a go! It's been on for nearly 2 weeks now & (touch wood) everything is running smoothly! & what's more, the radio, horn & clock all work all the time now too! After spending a fortune on all different makes of rota arms over the past year it's like a miracle & my lovely Landy has a reprieve from being put on Ebay!
Cant thank the Distributor doctor enough, at last someone decided to do something about poor quality rota arms. If anyone has the same problem, buy one from him, they're not even that expensive!
Also thanks to you guys for help & support, much appreciated xx
