towed my trailer up the back lane after a run to the local tip, next thing i know theres knockin & bangin going on under the floor.closer inspection finds the mounting bracket on the rear axle for the radius arm has ripped through:doh: leaving the arm flapping about. anyone else suffered this one? wondered if i could weld it strong enough. i have a small mig also a slightly larger arc. dont really want to change axle,i know the friggin lot is gonna be seized solid..mucky`un.

one of mine was picked up on the mot before it actually parted... reappears on here every few months so must be a fairly common problem

Buy a new bracket and crank up the welder , if your welding isnt that good --- get someone that can to do it for beer tokens .
But before you cut the old one off make some datum marks in the axle so the new mount goes back on in the same place :)

If you do weld it, then have a think about things before you start. While steel will 'weld' with all sorts of contaminants present I would advise you clean all work areas back to bare clean metal. Get a nice snug joint between any new bracket and the axle casing.

I would probably preheat the work area (axle) given that the axle body is likely to be a heavier gauge / wall thickness to the bracket. You probably don't need to worry about draining axle oil...not that much heat and its steel after all.

All this will help you get a clean solid weld. Wish I could advise on amps but then this is really something you will have to work out!

Good luck

I snapped the radius arm off of my front axle. You can weld a new one on with an arc which is how I fixed my rear spring mount but if you have a look at the axle it is probably rotten which is what happened to my front one so I got a new mint casing and transferred the insides of my axle into a discovery one.

My white rrc had the same problem, Luckily I had a couple of spare axles and just swapped it.
As stated by other members you need a good clean area or it wont weld well. You can get the mounts from most land rover suppliers. Just make sure you weld it on in exactly the right place or you'll throw out the entire geometry of the back axle and have some major problems.

Hi again and thanks to all those who read and replied to my original thread. Went out and bought the replacement bracket from my local landy parts shop in bristol (£17.50) Now just waiting for the rain to stay off long enough for a mate to come and do the honours with the grinder and welder. I usually do my own body/sill patching myself but being this is a heavier grade job,he can do it especially as he welds/fabricates for a living. Update again when its done.

ripped radius arm continued(again) Matey welded on the new one.I was`nt totally happy with it at first due to it partly cracking off when i put the arm back in,I called him back and he cranked the amps up on the arc into the high 80`s and fired i dont know how many rods into it! Just remains to put on the wheel get the disco on the floor and purposley give the back axle some heavy grief on rough ground to check its gonna hold ok,dont want any mishaps with any future owners.
