Reverse lights not working despite new switch fitted.

I don't know if anyone can help. I have a 2005 Freelander 1.8. The reverse lights stopped working so I did the usual check and disconnected the reverse switch wires and by passed the switch and the lights worked fine. Got a new switch and checked it worked by connecting the wires and compressing the plunger. Lights worked ok. Fitted the switch but no lights seems the plunger is not going in far enough to make the connection. Any one else come across this problem? Many thanks.
 
My rear lights have stopped working yesterday I have yet to change the switch, hopefully I will get round to it today and I will report back, where did you purchase your switch from maybe it is a little to short ?
 
If the gear linkage has lots of slack, it may not be engaging revers fully, giving your symptoms.

Just did the continuity check nothing with reverse engaged so the switch isn't making. Next is the linkage but seems to be an under the car experience so might have to get the local Landrover independent to have a look.
 
So I have just finished fitting a new improved gear change linkage. Removed the engine undertray to access the front fitting. Removed the gear change linkage and fitted the new parts. I have a lovely firm gear change now but unfortunately the reverse lights are still not working. Any suggestions? or is a gear box out job.
 
Further research on this forum came up with the opposite problem to mine. The reverse lights were staying on after a switch change. The resolve was to fit a thicker washer. During my last MOT and service I had asked my local garage to carry out a gear box oil change.I rechecked my switch and found that they must have used the reverse gear switch to access the gearbox to carry out the oil change ? When they refitted the switch they fitted a THICK Washer and the result was that the plunger now couldn't compress enough to make the contact !! I removed the washer and my Reverse lights now work. A lot of work due to a mechanic not understanding how the switch worked but I now have a nice smooth gear change and new reverse light switch.

I can't imagine that the oil level is correct either. The filler hole is for filling and setting oil level. As you know, the switch hole is for the switch! I'd take the oil filler plug out and wait for the gush of oil. ;) I bet they didn't even put the correct oil in. I mean, if the incorrect filling method was used, what's the changes of the oil being correct?
