This often happens unfortunately. Most owners just switch it off. Some mirrors actually tilt upwards when they start to fail. It is caused by the potentiometers in the mirrors failing. Hard to fix.

Its not often I agree with a woman especially about a car issue but ......
shes right!
Unless your really good with little fiddly bits (if youll parden the expression) the only realistic way to fix is new mirrors
 
No I get annoyed with fiddly bits and things get thrown and I stamp my feet. Had a go.a blend motor the other day an couldn't get the bottom screw out. Gave up lol. Now have an annoying squeak from dash so it's all gonna have to come out again before I go mad

I concur aswell - I had one of my mirror assemblies apart to see how they worked (as the reverse dip wasn't returning on one side) and found that the potentiometers seem to be made out of some sort of ceramic disc, with a resistive track on them - which a wiper moves over as the motor moves the mirror.

On the one I took apart, both of the potentiometer discs had snapped or cracked and weren't fixable in any way I could see. Did a bit of a search at one point for replacements - but no luck on that front either. And typically you can't buy just a replacement motor unit - it has to be a whole mirror assembly.

However, looking at the motors - and a few other vehicles, there are a couple of models of Jag that had memory mirrors, and the motor housing looked similar. I've been meaning to buy one of the memory motors and try to fit it and see if it works in the P38 - but it's still a project that's on "the list"

The vehicles fitted with memory mirrors store a position with the mirrors dipped so you can see the rear wheel/flank and ground by the rear of the vehicle when reversing.

When the option is turned on - the mirrors auto 'dip' when reverse gear is selected - and then when shifted out of reverse they return to the normal position.

A lot of the time the memory function doesn't work properly due to the potentiometers (which give the ECU feedback as to the mirror position) fail - which can cause the mirrors to not return to their normal position, or for the mirror memories (which are stored with the seat presets for vehicles that have those) to not work properly.

And in normal LR fashion - you can't buy just replacement motor units for the mirrors, instead you have to replace the while mirror/housing etc.

Interestingly enough - I've seen replacement motors for the LR3 - but didn't think they looked similar enough to replace with a P38 one.
