Repositioning the 1.8s air filter box

Re a/filter upgrade - The standard air intake on the 1.8 seems low and a potential risk when fording / wading through water. Id like to raise this as much as poss. Has anyone repositioned the a/f in their engine bay?

What about where the tool kit straps onto? Remove that bracket and perhaps add an air scoop to the bonnet?

Or, replace the original with a screened and insulated box with a good pod in it?

Ideas please.

A nice large air filter housing piped to the top of the outer wing up near the A post. There is even a nice hole in the inner wing under the battery to run the pipe though.

The air filtration paraphernalia and associated plumbing seem most extraordinary. Odd blanked off pipes attached looking like inverted bison horns! What are they for and what would happen if they were removed?

I removed the outer left hand guard to see what space was available for fitting a raised air intake. A lot of accumulated crud was caught in the plastic layers behind the wheel. Ill do the same on the drivers side too as preventative maintenance.The piping Id most likely use is 65mm ID plastic down pipe. Fittings are readily available and with a little heat the pipe can be shaped to fit the space available. I can cut a hole forward of the batterys location to bring this to the existing air filter box. There was no sign of a 72mm hole there already. I may well fabricate a new air box out of aluminium sheet as Rover 820 air boxes are like rocking horses poop here. Are there any alternatives to an 82o air box?

You will have the hole in the inner wing. It's where the current pipe to the resonator goes. The resonator is that large plastic box behind the bumper. It can be dumped along with the other air filter housing stuff. Gutter down pipe is ideal.

The Rover 820 air housing is impossible to find in the UK too. The air filter housing from an MG ZR160 flows well, they are plentiful here in the UK. I'm not sure about NZ though.

Has anyone repositioned their air intake to beneath the LH guard by the A pillar? Some pic's please to help me sort this out in my head.

Yes Land Rover did. The TD4 and V6 draw air from a cool point near the RH A post, via a void in the inner wing. The silly part is, that lovely cooled air is then heated by the engine bay trunking. I've recorded intake temps of 55°C!!

Image what that does for power production.

I had a cool air intake on my MG ZS180. It picked up cool air from where the resonator is on the Freelander. It was a worthwhile mod as I picked up 10 Bhp.
My wife's MGF VVC also has a cold air pickup, giving similar power gains.

I had one of these on my ZS180.

Found the standard air intake behind the near side head lamp:

Can’t to the coolest place to put the air intake? Inside the wing near the A-post would be ideal place and the work of genius: would love to know how the intake pipe was routed?

I've tried to up date this thread but the upload a file function isn't functioning. Sadly even in this reply I click on the 'Upload a File' just below the text box but nothing happens. Ah Ha the old drag n drop trick works

Below: the plastic bracket needed a bit nibbled off it to allow the 65mm PVC to fit over without being obstructed by the lamp assembly.

You can see I used the st'd 65mm PVC wall brackets, trimmed a wee bit' to hod the CAF in place. To put the bend in the pipe I stuffed it with old rags, heated it and bent it to shape.

I fitted a K&N Apollo air filter

The filter does get quite dusty so I'm considering a snorkel arrangement.
