replacement of the steering wheel with a wooden one

Hi, I'm considering replacing the Bakelite steering wheel on my Series III with a wooden spoke steering wheel.
Have any of you done it and what precautions did you use?

I covered mine with Bakelite so I wasn’t castigated down the village pub. Nowt worse than being branded a pervert in the farmers guardian.

I think they are still metal inside.

I used one of these with some mods for the splines, gets admiring looks whenever I take it out
