I ordered a key2 from LR Parts in Liverpool, but they've supplied a Key4 which won't work with my memory seats etc. I've phoned them up and they said that's all that can be supplied now. So before I argue, is that true?

tnx

Ok, Hatfields in Liverpool (main dealer) said the same. Sort of. They said the've all been superceded to just one part number and therefore any replacement key would be the same regardless of what you ask for.

Hmmm, are they then meant to be programmed? I'm confused :)

as I understand it you have to have the other keys turned off in the cars memory for Key 3 + to work fully??

May I also ask how much did you have to pay?

£162 inc vat and delivery. Which in one sense, for the security of having a spare key, is money well spent. But there was no mention of having to have it programmed. Of course I'm at work and don't have the Rangie with me so can't test it yet...

hi nik , yes there correct as they have now changed the production the way the keys are done they always go for key 4 as they know from database what keys have been issued i.e. when new car is supplied with 1 and 2 , as for the resync its defineyly not needed I recently bought key 4 from main dealer in m/cr £128 incl vat given key walked out pressed unlock on fob got in started it and drove away ,, I did enquire but had already researched on net and it said just plug n play so to speak ...my mate works in the spares at main dealer and he explained that when new key is required he enters all info on computer linked to hq, and huff in Germany makes it then sent overnight to Coventry then sent out to dealer , I only waited 3 days and they rang and said keys here pick it up ,,now I use only key 4 and my seats etc are all synced in memory so I don't know if your doin it right ? hope this helps cheers mozz

If the becm has been changed, like they do when they change the becm, ecu, ignition barrel & whatever else, then that new key won't work.
New keys come already programmed & just need to be resynced in the drivers door or ignition if the correct series of becm is fitted.
If the becm has been changed, then the key will need to be component programmed. this means the becm has to be removed from the vehicle & stripped down, & the keyfob code has to be hacked directly into the chip. The other keys that were programmed will then be deemed useless.

Hope this helps.

So as I said, if the BeCM has been changed at some point in the vehicles life, new keys from LR won't prgrammed correctly.

Many thanks for the clarification Rick. :)

Key 3 & 4 wont work with the seats cos theres only memory 1 and 2 on the seat

Yep, thats the bit I'm querying. I'm more than happy that it will unlock the car and drive it away, but not allow the memory positions to be set on the seats. Its only a small thing, but annoying nontheless.

However, Mozz says it will work. So I'll see. What I don't get is how it would work. Because when I present a new key to the car, how does the BECM know that the new key 4 is replacing key 2 and not key 1. Not unless I have to resync all keys.

Hi Mozz, my point was - if he doesn't know if the BeCM has been swapped and neither does the dealer who supplied the key(s), the the new key(s) will not be instantly compatible with his vehicle...

If it has the original BeCM - then there would be no issue!

These P38's oftentimes have dubious and varied history, and as Rick can no doubt atest, the BeCM gets changed out at great expense with regularity, because of unknowledgable garages 'blaming' the BeCM needlessly.

hi sainty now I agree with what you say ive had same problem over years re-syncing the p38s for the lads on here and come across regular problem regard swapped becm ,a lot of owners don't know if they been swapped and if they have been done proffesionally !! i.e. by rick ..top lad as he is .. and would not recommend any owner to f*** about with the brains of the car and send it to rick at callrova , cos as you know if he cant sort it nobody can !!!!!!!!! I once spent 2 days trying to sort out a re-sync on someones car over the phone , !!!!! well at the almost end of it and still no joy ??? he says "oh ive just caught my heel on a switch on the front of the seat base "!!!!!!!! I said click the switch . he did , then I said start it up and your ok to go !!!! how do you know that it will said he ????????? just do it I said !!!!! and he did and was almost crying cos he was so happy it was working !!!!!!! he then said again how did you know mozz ???? I said how long have u had the car ????? 3 yrs he said and its never happened before ???? no !!! your a lucky barsteward !!!! its a becm isolator switch .and some nutters put it in ???????? don't ask me why maybe antitheft device .. what should I do now he asks ,, easy either move the switch somewhere you wont catch it or remove completely ...happy days ay ...sorry this was a long story but just goes to show you cant always see the problem especially over the phone and they don't always give you the full scenario ..cheers mozz
