removing window winder handle

110 DEFENDER HARDTOP 300Tdi 1998
Any idea how to get the window winder handle off.
The book says you have to prise out the plastic insert and remove the screw,
but mine doesen't have an insert to remove, the handle is solid, i've tried prising it off but no joy, anyone got any ideas please.

Post a pic up so we can see. It should have a little bit of plastic you can prize off to gain access to the screw, its pretty much exactly the same as all other window wiper handles on any other car

There might be a c shaped clip behind the main part of the winder. Holding it on the winder arm

It will have a circlip behind the winder - my 1998 defender has circlips rather than the removable insert.

To see the clip, you need to push on the door panel and the black circular bit between the handle and the winder - you should then be able to see the clip in the gap and get some long nosed pliars in to release it. It's a bit fiddly!

Yes it will be a circlip, took me a while first time the fiddly little gits.... one tip... refit with the window closed tight and fit the winder at '10'oclock' for the drivers door and '2 o'clock' for the passenger side... then it wont be rubbing on knees.

The circlip can be a pain to get off. I found sliding a bit of rag between the door card and winder and rotating it about meant it would catch the clip so you can pull it off. Watch out it can come flying off though

the circlip doesnt need to come all the way off, I manageg with an allen key, use the shorter end to nget under the loop of the clip, and pull to remove at the same time.

refitting is easy, shut the window, fit in positions as mentioned before, put the circlip back into position, and a sharp whack gets em on.

I always knew they built defenders for people with no right arms but always assumed you were alowed a right leg.

Can always wind the window down to make room for both I guess

I use the hooky thing from a set like this Clarke CHT161 4-Piece Mini Pick & Hook Set - Machine Mart push the door panel in, locate the clip opposite the handle and give it a tug, once you've done it once it's easy.

Thank you all for replies and ideas, wanted to move as someone said above to ten oclock, bloody winder pressing on the muscle in my leg gets a tad annoying after a while, done now, first a bit of a faff second a bit better..........
