Seems like a stupidly basic thing to ask for advice on, but I'd like to pull out the driver-side dash vent WITHOUT BREAKING it. I can see on the online images of it that there are 4 metal clips that might snap off if I just use brute force.

I've had a try and can only budge it a little bit.

Is there any trick to removing them non-destructively?

Basically I need to repair the open/close lever, as it is currently stuck shut and the lever feels disconnected.

Dead easy mate. Push one (upright) side away from the edge and pull forward gently but firmly. They'll pop out like that, but be ready to look for the springy little washers that stop the vents rattling - 9 times out of 10 they go pinging off. I think I've got one or two spare if you do snap the first one.

Well I managed it quite easily in the end - after 30 mins struggling with screwdrivers/penknives, I did in in under a minute with the handles of two teaspoons.

The trick is to lever out one side first (I did the left/steering-wheel side first), leave the teaspoon in place, and lever out the other side. Once you've got the other side levered out it just pulls out the rest of the way. Didn't damage any of the four springy tabs either :)

The problem is that the plastic open/close linkage is completely missing and the pivot is damaged. Will try a repair but if its a new vent its hardly the end of the world.

Had the same problem on my last Discovery, the problem is you can't buy the vents on their own you need to buy the whole assembly with both vents. You would be better buying from someone breaking a Discovery

Aha I see! :)

In that case PM me your address and I'll get it posted off to you, probably only cost a couple of £ using Hermes - assuming you're not in the Highlands, Canada etc etc !!!.

Nice one, cheers! I'll have a quick try at repairing the existing one tonight, but if I fail or the repair is rubbish will gladly take you up on that.
Postage would be cheap as I'm only in Stalybridge/Manchester

Repair successful. Some aluminium bar and a small plastic gear did the trick :)
