Hello

I have a 300tdi, during my ownership the ABS has never worked. It looks like it hasn't worked for a while, a previous owner has removed the ABS dash bulb.

I've no time , money, or interest in resurecting it. Therefore is it a simple job to remove and discard the pump? and what would i need to do this? i.e blanking any pipes? anything else i need to consider?

the pump is just in the way for repairing inner wings etc. also if abs is fitted doesn't it have to work for the mot?

thanks j.

Im pretty sure if it left the factory with ABS itll have to still have it, and working for the MOT, the reason the last owner removed the bulb would have been to fool you (the next buyer) and the MOT tester, if the tester was more savvy he would have realised the light didnt illuminate when the ignition was turned on or perhaps he just turned a blind eye for beer tokens. (very naughty)

I wouldnt risk removing it, imagine if you had a bad accident and then it was discovered you had removed the ABS.

Have you tried to get the blink codes for the ABS to see what the problem is? its pretty simple just make sure you get the right code sheet (sierraferys got em all), you may only have to replace/tap back into place a sensor.

If you like do a search theres loads of info on how to get the codes you only have to remove a relay from the passenger footwell and get a paperclip to bridge 2 connections on the diagnostic plug.

interesting....

the problem is, is there is a massive list of things to do on this disco
way more pressing things........

it seems i'll have to just chance it on the mot.

My local garage had to fix my ABS on my old 300tdi twice to get it through it's last two mots, within a month it was crocked again. When I sold her to her new owner the ABS light was on, I explained about the MOT and pointed him in Landyzone's direction!

I didn't have mine taken off. I thought if you de-ABS it it would pass? Don't know if that's changed now or not?

Dont know about ABS but in other areas the vehicle is supposed to be as it came new . This has come up on a load of subjects , cats being a major one , I think its all a bit up in the air , being new regs and open to interpretation , who's to say what came fitted to a certain vehicle ? The tester will only get a generic standard from DVLA , or so I am told .....

This is what the MOT manual states.
If an ABS or ESC system has been intentionally rendered inoperative, the whole system must be removed. However, this does not apply to sensor rings or other ABS components which are an integral part of another component e.g. brake disc or drive shaft.
Therefore if fitted it must work etc etc.

cheers discool...

mine had pump removed and re plumbed..

its got 1 non abs hub on the front, and one abs hub.. the wiring is still there but not connected..

that looks like its sufficient for mot...

aaaaaah, my bad..... cheers Discool, so it appears that it has to work unless you remove the system, so that established back to the original question, "is it a simple job to remove and discard the pump? and what would i need to do this? i.e blanking any pipes? anything else i need to consider?"

Id start by putting a bulb in ;)

Sorry to hijack this thread with another noob question, but is there a definitive way to tell if a disco has had ABS at some point in its life? Mine has no ABS light on the dash and no pump and/or controller under the bonnet that I can see. However it does have wires coming from the hubs that I can't account for and more importantly at the back there are two brake flexi pipes above the diff, a fitment I believe only fitted to ABS models.

It has also just yesterday passed an MOT with a tester who I know to be thorough so that at least gives me some peace of mind.

lol ok will get bulb today its going to be on i just know it more to the point is it dangerous i feel worried about putting my 2 kids in it to be honest x:confused:

With the ABS light on the brakes work as if it wasn`t there. Just for my own piece of mind if it was my car I would find a quiet straight road with myself in the car and do so quick driving emergency stops. Getting to know the car and trusting it.
I would still get it fixed though and not remove it. Is there for your and your kids safety.
