Hi Folks,

Well, after making tools over the past two days for a full front cover strip down in order to swap my oil pump over. I followed the RAVE order of strip down (appart from a sneaky loosening of crank pulley) and this afternoon I got the sump off, after a battle of course!

Looked up at the engine and everything looks clean and in order. Then I noticed the pick up pipe had a rubber membrance accross it? It was smooth accross and tight so it looked like it was meant to be there? BUt I have never seen a pick up pipe with a membrne over it so had a pick at it. It fell appart in my hands and was jammed in there tight. Looked like this then...

Someone has been in there before I reckon, juding by the selant on the sump gaset face. This membrane actually looks liek it could be part of a rubber glove!!!

I picked it all out and it was jammed hard against the pickup and looks like the pump has been working hard to clear it!!

Looks much better now...

Do you reckon I can safely put it all back togther withoit stripping the rest down? I am convinced this would have been giving me the trouble I had!

Sump had a fair bit of crap in it to...

NIce and clean now. Just needs gasket sealant removing in the morning...

So folks, safe to put back together and just keep the pump gears for another day??

Cheers
Dave

Looks like you've done a good job there, and yes, I'd stick it back together .. )

Mine (300Tdi D1) looked similar, but more like gasket goo ...

Personally I would slip the pump out, sit the strainer in a cup of new oil and turn the pump, check its all nice, I would probably strip the pump and check the gears and bushes first!

You were dam lucky not to screw the engine with that lot on the strainer GO BUY A LOTTERY TICKET
If in any doubt fit new pump
pressure test is a must if you put it back

Amazing! Almost as bad as a surgeon leaving a glove inside a patient!
Your sump was quite dirty inside, Id def do a bit more cleaning/checking of the oil pump, who knows what could have got in there!

I did have myself all set just to put it back togther today. But there is doubt cast now! I will have alook at what else is required before I make my mind up. I just want it going again.
I had previously ran a full engine flush through the engine so was thinking all the sludge is as a result of this. The filter was actually quite clean.
Big decission time...

In for a penny, im for a pound!

I cleaned everything up of existing selant all over the place. Refitted the windage tray using thread lock.

I actually moved my axle stands onto the front of the chasis which allowed the wheels to drop right down giving more room for sump refitting.

Gave the pick up pipe a good old clean up. Gave it a well deserved birthday!

Applied the selant as per RAVE. Stuck on a new gasket and the sump actually went back in place pretty easy!

New filter fitted. New rubber onto the transmission cooler pipe. Crossmember back where it belongs.

Big refill of oil in the moring for the test. Fingers crossed folks!!

Cheers

Rubber glover I reckon also, mental!

Mine had lots of bits of RTV in it - the bits that squeezed out the edges of a join and break off.

Is your engine 15P? My 10p sump didn't have the removable baffle.

No idea? Its a 2001 4.0 V8 if that helps??

I only used a tiny ammount of RTV, so should not get any excess. But in case it was one large piece of what ever it was! Must have been in there for years!!

What type of oil do you use?
The inside of the engine looked very dark, almost like burnt oil.
But IIRC petrol engines contaminate oil more heavily than diesels.
The sludge in the sump was pretty epic!

Put it all back togther yesterday and she is running sweet as nut! Purring like a kitten in fact!

The oil I just put in is 10-40 Magnatec stuff. Thought I would give this a go and see how it runs?

I think the engine ran a little hot for a while and struggled with a half choked pickup pipe. I have not had the sump off in the almost 5 years I have owned the car. So that rubber has been in there the whole time!!!!
