Dear all,

don't know what happened but I can't insert my key into the tank cap, so I cant remove it from the filler neck.

Any idea how to remove the cap without destroying the filler neck? The cap itself is not so expensive...

They freeze up, could that be the issue ?
They also (can) get corroded behind the flap that covers the key hole. Penetrating fluid helps free things up.
You can use a screwdriver to open the flap and then heat the key with lighter/blowtorch. i've had to do that in the past. The key hole gets a squirt of 3in1 everytime I remember and its not been a problem since.

Has something been jammed in the lock after the last time you filled up or is the cold weather frozen the lock. Try some WD40 spray on the lock and key first. alternative would be a flathead screwdriver.

OK I forgot to tell you the car stands in a garage where the temperature is above 0 degrees.
I already flooded the key hole with WD40 and the first pin is movable (checked with small screwdriver).
maybe I'm stupid or the key is strange, but seems to be it does not fit because there is a metal part blocking, and thats not moveable.

Please notice that since I bought the Defender I just filled up one time...

Guys be careful about posting how to remove the fuel filler cap without the key, on a public forum

Far better to PM the O/P if you want to give this kind of advice.

good advice.

also, if the OP can’t work this out, there is no hope for future land rover ‘issues’ lol
