Don't take the key out the fuel cap......

I tried it earlier, was filling the hippo with fuel and wanted to do the windows up before I paid... so just take the key out the fuel cap while you're filling up, right?

No, put the fuel cap back in place first or you'll get a pile of bits like below. The key didn't come out easily so I gave the inside bit a wiggle and watched in disbelief as springs and things bounced across the forecourt.

Anyone wants some fuel, my tank is open for siphoning until I figure out how it goes back together

Hi, with the cap in your hand, did you 'lock' it first before trying to remove the key or did you just pull the key with it in the 'unlocked' position? You should be able to remove the key in the locked position whether it's fitted to the vehicle or in your hand. Good luck with the reassembly.

At least the bits didn't fall down the filler tube !!

I unlocked the cap, pulled the whole thing out, but for me the key seemed locked in the cap at this point? But if you push down the plastic dome that's the opposite end to the key, you can turn the key around normally to the unlocked position. However this allows the cylinder to slide out of the cap and then the whole thing can be taken apart.

Wasn't actually a big job to put it back together tbh. Just had to line up the pins so that when the key is in, they are all flat against the cylinder. Luckily (I think) I had all the bits...
