Remapping for TD5's

Hi everyone, After going to a local motor show this weekend I saw a old friend there who I got chatting about general landy 'stuff'. One thing that came up in conversation was remapping, I was talking to him about how to increase my MPG and get a bit extra 'ooomphh'. I was actually quite shocked when he said that he was getting on average an extra 8 MPG which is quite good!
I just wondered if anyone has any advice about a remap and what sort of MPG gains people are getting, Thanks in advance!

Not cheap but my motor had loads more torque and better mpg. Cant say it was 8mpg better though. trouble is because the motor is more lively you tend to drive it that way which cancels any fuel savings.

Ok thanks, i'll have a look into it. While I was at the motorshow I saw a local company there, who were selling switchable remapping units...The concept sounds quite good. You get a unit which holds two different remaps and also the current (standard) software. It sounds quite appealing as it means that I could have a economy remap, a high performance remap and of course my standard software to switch between when it suits me!
I don't think they were the cheapest either....normally they said it would cost £599 but at the motorshow they were doing an offer for £499....I didn't jump in straight away though because I wanted some advice.

I'd make sure they understand the TD5 diesel engine before letting them loose.
There are a lot of generic tune up chips out there but one type does not fit all no matter what they might say.
Plug and play will never be as good as a custom tune for your specific engine.
Also their site seems to be aimed at the rice rocket market with petrol engines ???

J E Engineering in Coventry did my TD5 Disco, and it goes like a rocket.

The fuel consumption overall is as good or better than before.

But it is still as dangerously bad off the standing start, like at Roundabouts with a trailer. Like all TD5 Discos, it refuses to respond to throttle until AFTER the revs are up.

I took it to J E Eng hoping that would be better, but it isn't.

Driving it normally (solo) the performance gain is pretty amazing.

I had a chat with them today, they said the majority of their work is for diesels. The remaps are fully custom, have TUV approval and come with three years warranty. I spoke to them about 'generic' remaps and they said that they do not deal with these, only custom tuning. You can have the option to have the vehicle 'live' mapped on the rolling road aswell. I dont think this would be nessesary though.
Apparantly how it works is that the 'ST3' is used to take a live reading from the ECU and then two modified files are developed from it, these are then uploaded to the unit alongside the standard software that was originally taken off it. They said to me not to get confused between the 'st3' and a 'tuning' / 'plug and play' box because they are completely different.
I just really like the idea of having two custom remaps that I can switch between and also my standard one there with my if I want it.

Had my 90 td5 remapped by alive tunning.I cannot get the smile off my face.Best money ever spent.MPG is better 30. Thats on short runs and driving harder due to the upgrade.Will check it out soon on a longer run.

same here its a completely different vehicle now

TD5 alive did a re-map on my 90 at Billing... just the basic - Stage 1. The aim was to remove the flat spot when pulling away, and improve the economy.

The results were everything they promised...

I've since gone for the Ashcroft transfer box ratio change - 1.4 to 1.2 (Disco spec)... Combined with the re-map I now have a far more relaxed commute (50 miles/day)through the Cotswolds and return on average 33mpg.

Also have a Kenlowe fan instead of the viscous unit - hasn't cut in since I fitted it!... and run on General AT2 265's...

TD5 Alive recommend the EGR blanking as a worthwhile next stage... and possibly a de-cat exhaust... but will have to save up for them!

So were you really please with the results from Dynachip? They seem cheap compared with other re-map specialists.

my average over the last 6000 miles is 34 MPG from my defender 90.

I cant imagine that if i get a remap, i will get 40MPG from A defender.

I have EGR removed, thats it!!

Oh and some fill ups i get 36 mpg average.

Heard good things about these people......IRB Developments - Diesel Tuning and More Makes me want to save up for a TD5 now.

i tried to get a EGR kit from them, tried ringing, various emails and nothing. In the end i got it from TD5 Alive.

They do have good reviews though from other forums. Think the guy is on another forum, Porny or Porky or something is the guy who owns it i think.
