Hi all
I’ve got a 51 plate Freelander & wondering what the best best remap/chip is for
A.... mpg
B.... bhp
C..... combined

Also what is the saving mpg by taking the 4 wheel drive out

Probably been asked a million times so thanks in advance

Assuming your car is healthy, removing props saves you negligible amounts of fuel. If you are going to do that, you need to go the whole hog and remove as much weight as possible - rear diff, rear drive shafts, even the rear pinion on the IRD if you want to remove all wastage. You'll need to leave the shaft stubs in the hubs though or else the wheels will fall off - in fact if you're unsure - stop at just the props. Making this change is a modification to the vehicle and you'll need to inform your insurer. As its modified, they may raise your premiums which will probably cost more than any fuel savings!

As for the other stuff. Some people love em, some hate em, but everyone needs to know what engine it is first :)

Petrol or diesel?

No point in removing the propshafts as it makes no noticeable MPG difference and as GG said, will push up insurance premiums.

Sorry Td4........ bloody insurance companies!!!

With it been 110bhp I wondered wether people just go for the extra power, I don’t know what’s possible 150bhp say.....

Or people go with 130bhp & save fuel along the way

Won’t bother with throwing all the ballast overboard

Thanks so far

You can't improve power and Mpg on a diesel engine. A diesel is mixture controlled engine. So to make more power, you have to burn more fuel. Thus mapping a diesel for power, won't guarantee better economy. On the contrary, after a remap the engine response is improved so much, many driver's use the extra performance. This counteracts any potential fuel economy gains anyway. Also remapping will increase your insurance more than any other single mod. So any slight economy gains are outweighed by increased insurance costs.

The best way to improve economy on a TD4 is to make sure the injectors are clean internally, so they atomize the fuel correctly. Fouled injectors is the single biggest fuel economy killer in a diesel. Also change the air filter, oil and crank breather very 8K miles. ;)

... and presumably make sure the EGR is working well and not bunged up letting exhaust gas through when it shouldn't. Plus make sure the induction parts and pipes are clear and in decent condition.

What is the best way to do this fuel additive ?

I've had proven good results with Comma Diesel Magic. However no fuel treatment can completely clean out the injectors, in the way a strip-down can. Obviously a fuel additive can't replace any worn injector components either.

Just a quick query on this @Nodge68 ...
When I got my RonBox I found a noticeable improvement to both?
It does depend on the driver, condition of the injectors and the settings used on the RB. My own TD4 made no real difference to Mpg if I set the RB to the lower 2 settings. However if I use the upper 3 power settings, my Mpg takes a nosedive.
