Hoping someone can help...

2003 Discovery 2 Td5 Auto with factory-fitted air con.

Recently noticed warm air when a/c switched on and couldn't hear a/c compressor clutch engage. Anyway, checked fuse under bonnet - F6, looked fine. Nothing to easily check under bonnet a/c compressor clutch relay (R11) with, so swapped it with R12 (fog lamp relay) - appeared to be exactly the same. All good now with air con, so the original R11 relay must have died - old age?! Incidentally, that is the first relay that has died on me since vehicle purchased new in 2003! First and only relay ever replaced! Is that unusual?

Now, need to buy a replacement relay but can't seem to find one - bit confusing really! Prefer new relay and either genuine or a close looking match to original relays so it doesn't stand out too much - like to keep original spec wherever reasonably possible. Can anyone suggest a local or overseas supplier (internet) and the correct part no. for the correct relay (R11)?

If you want as the original google out YWB10004L if it's yellow or YWB101210L for black and choose the best deal for you

Thanks a lot for that! It's the black with the green stripe - made by Tyco I see. They (L/R Tyco relays) seem to be very reliable - will be the first one I've bought in 16 years!

Choose the relay from the list in this link https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID010268

Okay, found out from Rimmer Bros that:

"The part number has now superseded to YWB000440P and this is an OEM version of the part. the cost of this is £4.95 + vat and carriage."

Just ordered now, total of AUD 19.50 delivered from UK.

Shopped around and it was a little hard to find YWB101210L - some from USA on eBay, but all used condition and quite expensive after exorbitantly expensive freight charges. Local, large independent L/R business contacted over the phone said $35 pick-up from Melbourne. Had a look on aliexpress as well, but thought overall Rimmer Bros was the safest and cheapest option.

Aliexpress had "1PC Car Violet Relay for KIA 12V/ 20A DECO 5 Pins Gray Color Power Relay Assembly" for USD 0.96! Didn't want to take the risk as it mentioned 10A/20A and "Kia" - bit confusing: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/329...chweb0_0,searchweb201602_9,searchweb201603_53

It's a 5 pin 12V/20A relay, so guess there are other options out there?

Okay, tried aircon yesterday, clutch not engaging - no cold air! History:
  • Never a problem with air con since original vehicle purchase (factory-fitted) back in 2003 - 2003 Disco 2 Td5.
  • Just for routine maintenance had the R1234a re-charged around 6 months ago; technician said that the seals had held up well - clean bill of health and only needed a small top-up of refrigerant.
  • All good until a week or so ago - then warm air and clutch not engaging.
  • Everything looks in very good nick (at least superficially) - drive belt all good.
  • Did diagnostics (holding down two buttons on climate control face plate) - no faults, all good
  • Checked 10A compressor clutch fuse (appeared intact).
  • No multimeter, so swapped out a/c clutch relay with front fog lamps relay.
  • Tried aircon, working again - all good. Had it running several times for extended period over several days on a couple of long trips (could hear and see (revs) clutch engaging and air was cold).
  • So, assumed it was a faulty clutch relay; purchased replacement relay for front fog lamps.
  • Turned on air con yesterday - not working and clutch not engaging!
  • Checked with Foxwell - no faults I could see.
  • Surely the swapped out relay hasn't died as well?
  • Only strange thing is this period of not working, then working (after relay swapped), then not working again, over the last 10 days, seems to coincide with a coolant leak I had under my expansion tank and a small coolant leak from the fuel cooler. [Fuel cooler leak fixed and now waiting on new expansion tank to fix that leak as well]
  • During the coolant leak period the a/c fan (condenser fan?) came on one day after the vehicle was parked and stopped - that's how I noticed I'd lost around 2 litres of coolant! Is there something in this?
Any thoughts?

Might be bad contact in the fusebox's connector where the clutch relay's circuit is... or a dry joint within the fusebox, unless it's a wiring issue
