I want to buy a tow rope/strap - just in case. What length/breaking strain would you recommend for a Defender 110?

I've got a 5ton wrachet strap cut in half and a not tied in each end there prob about 2 meters at most , 5t and a decent length would be more than ample

NO NO NO!!! Never knot a strap. Not:rolleyes: only does a knot significently weaken any rope. but on a strap the sharpedges will cut into the strap as it passes round the tight bends in the knot weakening it even further.. And 2mtrs is far too short for a recovery anyway. As you end up having to drive into the same hole as the stuck vehicle.

yes if you only want it for towing a broken down vehicle on the road. In which case it's too long

that's for locking the wheels in place on a tow truck or trailer not for towing with:confused:

If it's for recovery work get strops that have a certified SWL rating. not a breaking strain. a strop with a 2tonne SWL, will have a breaking strain of approx 14Tonnes.

cheeky

you said 8M was a good length - he said it was too long! Does anyone know what they're talking about?

And Redhand was referring to the fact that 8m's is illegal to tow on the road !

Recovery wise you don't know what length you'll need until you need it so best get a few different lengths. 3m, 5m, 8m and 50m a good start point !
