I use a propane tank as the receiver for my compressor and even after two years of use the air still smells of rotten cabbage from the propane residue. Just vent the thing to air, flush it out with air or water if you choose, then using standard BSP air/gas fittings connect it to your compressor with quick fit connectors.
Just in case anybody is interested.

Red hose in first picture connects standard compressor air tank to gas bottle with simple quick connectors. Air tools still plug into compressor regulator which has the blue hose connected.

Only mod to compressor air tank is to remove the blanking plug and fit a second quick fit connector in its place.

Gas bottle has had the standard propane valve removed and a 3/4 BSP reducer fitted to allow a high pressure (20 bar) gas ball valve to be fitted.

To use the extra tank simply join the two air tanks together. Open the gas valve on the gas bottle and run the compressor as normal. Once up to pressure the extra capacity makes paint spraying and sand blasting a doddle. You can also close off the gas bottle, disconnect it from the compressor, and take it where its needed but it gives unregulated air at whatever pressure is in the bottle at the time. It easily holds enough air at 150psi to fully inflate five 265/75x16 tyres from flat.

Very impressive:)

Ever thought of adding some rucksack straps so it can strap to your back and make it fully mobile?:D

Tried that but it made getting on the bus a bit awkward ;)
Of course you dont have to use such a big tank but its all I could find at the local tip. Cost me a packet of choccy biscuits.

I only use the extra tank for air hungry tools and dont want the compressor running flat out all the time. It gives a nice even air supply for paint spraying and I also have a small sand blasting gun which needs a lot of air.

OK. I'm really in to this idea, so I thought I'd pick your brains. In the photo of my compressor below, you can see the following.

1) left side quick connector with my hose attached - the pressure in this one is controllable
2) right side quick connector. the gauge on this side shows the pressure in the air receiver
3) to the left of the left quick connector is a blanking plug which looks like it could be used
4) centre front of the bottle - another blanking plug

Question, do you think I could just use the quick connector on the right hand side to plug in my extra air receiver (an 18kg propane bottle that I've just taken the tap out of and filled with water). That is obviously going to be the easiest option. I always thought that it might just be an outlet rather than an inlet though, but it makes sense if not given that you can't alter the pressure on that side. Would the other two blanking plugs be suitable places for additional connectors too?

I'd guess you can use your right hand quick connector (2) or the one in the centre of the bottle (4).

The red thing on the right hand side is the emergency valve thingy. So that right side must be at the full pressure of the cylinder.

I'd assume the left hand white blanking plug couldn't be used, as that is only at the pressure set by your regulator.

I'd say 2 is your best and easiest option. Although I would probably want to change that right hand quick connector with a double action PCL one.

Not sure exactly what they are called, but you have to pull it back and clip it forward to lock and unlock it. The one you have on there looks like one of the single action ones, that clips forward when attached to something but stays back when not attached. I have a few of these on my air lines and from time to time have knocked them such that they release and dump the air in the line.

If you knocked yours, it would dump the entire contents of the auxillary bottle.

I got an industrial Clarke compressor.. 150L 16cfm..

its brilliant, the big tank means you never run out of air... only cost be £200 off ebay :D

mundungus, thanks for the tip. It looks like I could have it bristling with connectors :) I'll look in to getting another connector for the fitting on the right hand side! :)

Hi all firstly Ill say I have only really joined this forum for advice on this project I dont own a landy so I hope this wont put you guys off helping me I do however have a quad so im growing to a landy in a round about way :)

anyway down to business, Firstly thanks for the pictures on here it helped me doing exactly what you have done but now im confused.

I was told i needed to T off both tanks i.e have them in parallel not series but i wanted to know what you guys whos done this think, basically I am doing this so I can use my spray gun for longer as my CFM is addaquate but I dont want the noise of my compressor constantly going (my neighbour is a serious moaning *&%$ )

I have done a little diagram of how ive done mine its no cad standard but should give you an idea so again help and advice is very very gratefully recieved.

also Tombardier the blank you mentioned is a non return valve I think, you may find removing there will be a spring and bit of a rubber bung in there.
