Been told by different mechanics a few different things. One says full transmission rebuild because torque converter is on it's way out, the other says, rubbish it just needs new valve body and if not he'll be able to see for certain once he removes valve body. Does anyone know of this is right- can you detect if there are other transmission problems just by removing valve body?

I doubt it. The value body is just an aluminium block with lots of drillings for the fluid to make its way to the various pistons and actuators inside gearbox itself.

The fluid flow is controlled by solenoid valves fitted to the valve block, but there's absolutely no need to remove the valve block to replace the solenoid valves.

What vehicle is it?
What are the symptoms?, as it'll be difficult to ascertain the cause of your issue, without knowing what is wrong. ;)

Thank you so much for your reply.
It's a Freelander 2, bought it 2 weeks ago and realised an hour later that I'd bought a dud. Freelander 2 2012 only 95kms. Only when engine heats up it, after stopping at lights and then accelerating it hesitates and does a big jerk, sometimes slightly slipping back beforehand. It seems like the gears are slipping, like a learner driving a manual. It sometimes does this just randomly when stopped at lights too. Would be grateful for any feedback whatsoever:)

If it does it when pulling away, the it's unlikely to be the torque converter, or the valve block in my opinion.
First thing is having any codes read, and finding out if the fluid has been changed. An automatic gearbox is very dependent on its fluid, so it needs changing at regular intervals of about 60k miles. If it's not changed, then often the performance and life of the box is affected.

Thanks for this. The gears sometimes do slip when stopped too. If the fluids havent been changed regularly can a flush and refill be sufficient or in some cases will it need a gearbox rebuild?

Like I said, an auto is very dependent on its fluid, so quite often simply having a fluid change can fix issues. If however the issues continue after a couple of changes (often less than half the fluid can be drained), then it could well need a gearbox rebuild.

Any luck with this?

Without a garage seeing and checking the gearbox they won't know whats wrong. They can talk about likely issues from previous eggsperiance but that's it. Some will change the valve body including all solenoids as one item where as others may just change the solenoids as required. There's also sensors to check anorl. It's rare for the valve body to leak but they can if they're made up of several layers. Blaming the torque converter etc... I would be making sure any garage I went to had eggsperiance of dealing with the auto I was taking in for repair, and the car it's fitted to. If yer stuck for a second opinion and none intrusive diagnostic then LR mains dealers perform this for a fixed price of one hour labour. You can always drive/walk away after knowing what their opinion is of the fault.

Hi, the gearbox guys are changing the valve body today. They said when the valve body is removed they will be able to see if there are bits of metal swirling around, and rule out if it's actually the gearbox itself. I hope it's just the valve body but with my luck, I'm preparing for the bad news. Thanks for asking mate.

The valve body is just a lump of aluminium, with holes in it. Surely it just needs some solenoid valves?.
But fingers crossed it works.
