Just received my replacement rear wiper motor from LR Direct for my Defender 300TDI and it appears to be the same except for it having different connections. The unit looks identical and has the correct part number printed on it, however there are two black connectors which connect to the loom to. Whereas on mine there are no black connectors, rather a space at the back where the wires kind of slide in sideways. :confused:

It's to fit a Defender 300 TDI - I'm assuming this part is also suitable for the TD5, in which case it has the upgraded wiring etc. Can anyone advise what I need to modify, ie which wire go where.

Hi Paul in there lies the problem - The current wiring harness doesn't really have a connecter, well not the kind you would expect.! It's literally just 3 wires which attach to a single metal type of spade connecter that slide into a slot on the back of the motor.

I will definitely get you some photos tomorrow when I get home, maybe someone with a similar set up could post a photie tonight if they have one or maybe describe it better than I have. I've attached an image of what the new motor looks like. I hope some of this has makes sense :)

I bought one of them complete with arm and blade which was on special offer last year but none of the wires matched and I didn't want to damage it as I couldn't then send it back. In the end I fitted one from an L200 :D Cost me nought and fitted without an issue. Best bet would be to find someone with a later model and then trace what goes to each connection but that would involve taking the cover off the safari door and tracing each wire.
 
Ah bugger, the part number for the replacement motor is AMR3676. It would that the part number for my original motor is AMR1054.

It would appear that the early Defender 300TDI uses the AMR1054 and was replaced in 97, I think. My Defender is a 1994 Model so obviously requires the AMR1054. However, you can not get this part unless you pay £150 plus which is nuts. There must be someway I am able to convert the wiring harness to fit the new motor AMR3676. Can anyone help, or maybe interpret the wiring diagram to help change the wires. Thank :)

The problem is not being able to see the plug from the later loom as it plugs into that motor which is the issue I had. If I could see the later loom and how it plugged into the motor it would be easy. The colour of the wires from the socket to the motor are not necessarily the same as the loom....
 
What we can say for a 1994 defender is:

The only thing going to the rear wiper switch is a GREEN ignition live wire from fuse 16. This wire then continues to the rear of the car and on to the motor. Also going from the switch are a BROWN/LIGHT GREEN (park switch +ve) & RED/LIGHT GREEN (switch to wiper +ve). There is also a light green black but that is the rear wash which goes to the engine bay to the 2nd washer pump.......

So we have an ignition live, park switch live and switch to wiper live which also go to the motor PLUS ground through the bracket and hinges and to the body.

In order to get any motor working (such as this, the original or my L200 motor) we need to connect the ignition live then work out which way round the other two wires need to be. When I came to connecting the L200 motor I just connected the ignition live and then guessed the other two...... when I did this it blew fuse 16 which I replaced before swapping the other two wires round and trying again which worked. It didn't matter to me as the motor was free and I had another one too but thats not going to work with the new motor.

What I need really is a wiring diagram from a newer model...... I will have a look now.

Now looking at the it says:

Wiper motor

To link the two wiper systems, do the following:

  • Connect the Td5 door White/Green to the 300Tdi Red/Light green (Fig 1 & 2)
  • Connect the Td5 Black & Black/Green to the 300Tdi Black (Fig 1 & 2)
  • Run a new wire from the 300Tdi Green to the Td5 White/Green running from the Relay to the Wiper motor park switch connector. Insulate the floating White/Green wire (Fig 3 & 4)
  • Insulate the 300Tdi Brown/Light green and tie away

These colours don't match the bit of loom you seem to have. I've run out of time right now but will have a look later, there are diagrams for both so should be easy to follow. Mrs Cowasaki is wanting to go to sleep now and complaining about the light from the laptop so I'll look tomorrow if you can't follow it.....

Looking at the images (which isn't easy as the resolution is not great).....

With the plug (you will need to source one probably from PaulMC) plugged into the wiper motor and in the orientation that it appears in your picture of the cable above the 3 wires from left to right seem to be:

1 - Brown/Green
2 - Green/White
3 - Black

But there should be an extra connection AND the loom you showed (which has two connectors) seems to have a different coloured set of wires.


To be honest it would be a simple task to fit it IF I had access to a TD5 safari door for 15 minutes...... A decent TD5 wiring diagram would be very helpful too.
 
The early and late rear wiper motors are wired the same, the only difference is the external connections.

On early motors, the park switch was wired internally.

On late motors, the park switch is wired on a separate (3-way) connector.

The Discovery-1 adpator harness (STC1825) resolves this issue - but, costs silly money.


The wiring colours should be common to both early and late motors -

Green - Fused ignition-switched live to park switch

Red/Light Green - Live from rear wiper switch to motor

Brown/Light Green - Live from park switch to rear wiper switch

Black - Earth


The late TD5/Puma wiper motor is wired exactly the same - but, the wiring from the switch to the tail-door is different - there's a changeover relay in the tail-door harness, which replicates the switching of the older rear wiper rotary switch.

The late TD5/Puma dash switch switches this tail-door changeover relay to earth - meaning that there's only one wire from the dash switch to the tail-door.

Just about to fit a replacement heater matrix (replacing broken 300TDI for s TD5) and yup you guessed it, it's got a different connector on it. Paul can you supply one of these also please (the black one). The wires are identical so literally just need the connector to fit on the original harness. :)

The page from the Haynes manual that you posted is PRE the change and in fact identical to the 300TDi :D
