Hi guys,

Im having problems seeing out the back as my rear view mirror is dark all the time from the bottom up just a bit of normal mirror on the top, have pushed the buttons on the mirror but not going to normal. the back window is tinted to trying to see out the back is murder.

Anybody had the same problem? Is it a fuse or has the mirror just burned out? If so how do i replace or fix it as its a pain in the backside. I am going to end up driving over a car when im backing up!!!

The fluid inside the mirror that reacts to effect 'dimming' can leak out when the unit fails. While not toxic, it can be an irritant and will certainly mark the plastic on the dashboard if it drips onto it.

You have two options, replace with another auto-dim unit that vary in price on fleabay (£50 and upwards at the minute) or as previously stated buy a standard unit at around £10 - £20. Fittings are universal and in the case of a standard unit you can conceal the wiring by shoving it behind the headlining.

I was going to go to my local scrappy and get the glass out of a rear view mirror and stick it on my mirror but due to the danger of fluid leaking im going to have to change it.

How do i take the old one off, there are no screws i can see, is it glued on or do i just pull and off it comes.

The mirror windscreen mounting are not all the same. They changed after a certain model year around 2000.:)

Mirror and fitting changed on 2000 model, i have one of the later ones but it will not fit the earlier screen boss. Make sure you get the right one.

mines faulty too but the other way round the light on the mirror worked but it never tinted so i just lived with it cos if you got tinted rear windows you dont realy need a tinting mirror too.
just get any old mirror from a scrapy and one of those mirror fixing kits from any petrol station and your sorted (ive found that the sticky pads arnt that good but the mesh with the glue is hard to find now but alot better)
just watch out when you pull the old stud off, ive seen the glass crack by putting a screwdriver under it to prise it off:eek::doh::eek:
(me about 8 years ago on a mondeo windscreen)
