After replacing the rear main oil seal on the crankshaft, I have refitted the engine (2.25 Diesel) and gearbox only to find that is ****ing oil out more than it was in the first place. This time I'm going to re-do it in situ. I'm hoping to avoid having the gearbox clutch starter and sump off a third time so if any one has any tip for the job.........
The oil slick in the picture is after about 30 seconds of running.

make sure you put it in the correct way round and if memory serves correctly the split wants to be at the top. other than that make sure the lip don't get damaged on the way in

Yep split to the top for a 3 bearing crank and if I remember it's a bigger seal for the 5 bearing lump. It's probably fouled in the main bearing cap. Did you replace the cork "T" seals in the bearing cap.

Regards WP.

Thanks Chaps!
It is 3 bearing, and I wasn't quite drunk enough to put the thing in the wrong way around!!
I didn't know about the split being at the top though...
The T pieces are replaced and will be replaced again. I guess I'm going to have to just pull it all apart slowly - checking it as I go.

It's now stripped down on the gearbox side with the clutch and fly wheel out. This is as far as I could get last night before the thunderstorm started. I'm still trying to get hold of a hoist before I can take the sump off. I hope to do this tonight or tomorrow.

Oil seal replaced, engine sump and crankshaft back on, fly wheel housing back on, fly wheel back on, clutch back on, gearbox back on,engine back on starter back on, slave cylinder back on - I'v now started it and oil is still ****ing out. Driping on low revs and flowing on high revs.
Land Rovers - don't you just luv to ate em!!!
Not doing this job again this year. I'll just carry on the rebuild anyway and see how I feel next summer.
