rear hub nuts on disco 1

My mate was about to change his rear pads and discs on his disco this afternoon,that was untill he took the halfshaft out and saw the size of the hub nut

.Anybody know what size the nuts are as he'll need to be buying a socket!

Thanks Redhand,I don't think he was expecting anything that big tbh,Once he gets the spanner it will also be handy for borrowing for my Rangerover

Ah just paid £3.15 + vat for mine from me local independant. Dunno if it's the same thing, but description on reciept says "spanner-box wheel bearing 2 1/16"Af"

Woah, dunno if the one ah bought for me 110 is the same as Discovery. Check it oot furst just in case. It also says on the reciept- product no. ACC 08c- dunno if that's the shops no. or not.

I took mine off by hand.. am I lucky to be alive or are these not supposed to be tight? Considering I've driven 10k miles in the car since I've had it and they've never been off in that time I wonder if perhaps they are supposed to be only hand tight???

Just asking cos I have to put them back on and not sure if I should source a spanner...

Jeez .. can't remember the torque on them, but IIRC they're about M8 size so would be about 40Nm torque .. yes you need a spanner ....

I'm off to find a spanner on tinterweb as nobody in Trowbridge seems to sell one bigger than 38mm..

ok daft question.. looking at this cos I can order it with my parts:

606435 Hub nut spanner - for use with bar - rear axle non ABS from JA032851

how do I measure the torque when I put the nuts back on?

cos this one I can use with the torque wrench but boy is it a lot more money...

Hang on ... hub nuts ... you mean the large nuts separated by a thin tab washer ... My bad, big style .. I was thinking of the 5 outer drive shaft nuts ...

You're on about the hub nuts that load the wheel bearings and keep the hub on!!!!

Hand tight is still probably a tad loose. Tighten the inner one quite tight then back off quarter turn, fit the locking washer and tighten the outer tight to that ...

Should also have said the large locking washer locks both the inner and outer hub nuts .. bend it inwards to the inner nut, then move to a different flat and bend it outwards to lock the outer nut.

Should look like this .. I have a rear axle outside ..

according to the Landy book of lies it says....

tighten the adjusting nut whilst slowly revolving hub until all end float is removed... back off nut half a turn and retighten nut to 13-15in lb this shud give compression of the (new) seal and give hub end float of 0.013 to 0.10mm (0.0005 to 0.0004in).
if not replacing seal use a dti to check end float

whilst holding the inner nut, fit lockwasher and locknut and torque outer lock nut to 70-80ft lb (95-108Nm).
rotate hub several times and recheck end float.

too many books of lies out there.. I'm gonna stick to the RAVE CD and a bit of common..

Back off adjusting nut 90°. Tighten to 4 Nm.

I guess the tightening is to seat the bearings and the reason they came off so easy is because they are then adjusted to 4nm...

I'm just doing the shopping list so I reckon I'm gonna go for the cheap spanner, tighten it a lot then loosen it a bit..
