Problem number 2 this week :(
Yesterday I was driving home up hill at about 40mph. A very faint dull clunk sound. No big bang or anything. (Could barely hear it) and I lost all drive. If I put the diff in it will drive, if I don't.. it won't ! BUT without the diff it will move forwards if I start to apply the hand brake. Any ideas ? Many thanks. Jess

Sounds like you will need to get it up on Axle stands and give the wheels a spin and see what the prop / opposite wheel does?
At least that is where I would start.

PS, you may be better posting a problem like this in the 90 /11/130 section rather than the TD5 engine section.
If you send a PM to @blue beasty , he may move it...............Oh hold on I have just flagged him.

Cheers

Hello Jess, sorry to hear about your second problem this week. Unfortunately, I don't know what your problem is likely to be. It sounds most unusual to me. Can you describe what you mean by the vehicle will move if you start to apply the hand break? Does'nt make much sense to me and I'm sorry to say that I can't help you out. However, I will be collecting my own td5 from the mechanic and I'll run it by him. If I get any info back I'll post a new note.

Is there something wrong with the perfectly adequate explanation above?

Youre still got forgiven for a distinct lack in the pudding department you know :p

Thanks everyone. :) I'm on it. I can see now what Blue Beastie means, makes sense as I can see now that the hand brake uses the rear shaft. So yep, probably looks like a new shaft needed and hopefully nothing else. Many thanks again

Rear pinion shaft, perhaps?
Had a front one go in my old Classic, clean and easy break, just tootling along in suburbia, soft ping, no drive, simples.

Don't you start on me  I've just collected my defender td5 from my local garage, replaced thermostat, repaired two leeks in cooling system and managed to remove damaged bumper. All well and good, until I got about half a mile up the road and the engine cut out :(:( and other such unprintable thoughts. Now it's stuck about half a mile from home, on a steep hill and, it's pi55ing down with rain! So don't start on me

Probably not a snapped halfshaft.

Hope that helps

It will probably be your rear diff, I've destroyed loads when I trialled my Range Rover Special, never did a half shaft though, that's more Series motors. You have to pull the rear half shafts to remove the diff, so if it is a half shaft you will soon see.

@Alan Crossley ,

Are you not a happy bunny today?

Cheers
Got my td5 back from the local garage where my new thermostat was fitted and the two water pipes which look to go to the fuel cooler where repaired. Job done, €105:00 well spent. Left the garage, half way home, may be about half mile, and the engine cut out! Managed to get a local farmer to tow me home with his Lambourgini. The battery is f..cked and all I can get out of the motor is a slight hissing sound, which could be coming from the fuel cooler.

Now I need to get new battery €110 for a comercial unit . And, after that I can start to figure out what the f is wrong with it. Apart from that and Captain Puggwash and his freind Big Bird taking the p.. The world with me is cool o_O You having a good one?

Then maybe you need to start your own post stating you own issues ,rather than hijacking another persons post.....................which is what you have done.

@blue beasty , feel free to delete this post......Cheers
