Where do these mechanics get off saying it costs £600+ to renew a rear floor in a disco, you can get the bits for a £100, just swinging the lead if you ask me, you can have the floor out and preped in 3 hrs and a new one in in the same amount of time, and thats not sweating i should know i have done it recently and even if i say so a cracking job to, so i understand earing a living as i am a self employed spark but £600 plus is takes the p??? and totaly unjustifiable.

I did the rear floor in my old 300tdi disco myself, when I was even more clueless than I am now. And got Brand new floor section for £20 off a mate that brought it to fit in his disco and then wrote it off!:)

My younger brother just did the inner wing on my Discovery yesterday,

We noticed it the other day when we changed the battery over,

Whole new battery tray area and then right up the inner wing.

Dred to think what it would have cost at a garage.

You have answered your own question with the times you have worked out, £100 for parts plus 6 hours minimum @ £50 p/h + VAT + consumables + £500, thats working on 6 hours, when you take into account you generally overestimate to take into account unseen rot then you can see where £600 comes from...

Having done it myself, and taken a lot of care doing it so that I'm not just seeing a stop watch timer until it rusts again. I don't think 600 is all that unreasonable! :)

And how much care is taken in cleaning / prepping the exposed chassis, then painting it ?.What about seat belt mountings snapping off and all the other bits and pieces that need a bit of care to do a tidy job.Anyone offering to do the job professionally for less is either a bodger or a busy fool.

Took him about 4 hours cox.

He just made up a box for the battery tray, measured it all up and made the box on the bench, got it the way he wanted it then fitted it,

Then most of the rest of the welding was at the top half of the inner wing, still a fair bit of welding though,

he didnt have the inner wing like you do,

Just made the plates up his self.

Saved me a fortune,

Got to admit my younger brother is good to me that way,

600 quid. and people think they would clean and sort out the chassis. Don't think so. Just a quick buck for them. May have charged £550 and said it wasn't as hard as they thought. This is why I got rid of my Jag and bought my disco. Needs tons doing to it. But at least I can sort stuff out no worries. When i come to sort my boot floor out. The top of the chassis will be cleaned cure rust and wax-oiled. This way I know it's to my satisfaction at a fraction of the cost. Jag was too expensive when it came to the electronics. Plus I opened the bonnet and closed it again. Not much accessible.
