Rear diff pinion play

Hi,
Removed rear prop flange to replace the seal, I can lift/move up and down, side to side the pinion shaft am I right in thinking it shouldn't move at all ?? If I refit the flange there is no movement but it is only the seal that is stopping it so am I right in thinking this is fubbered??

The flange is needed,try it without the seal and you will see.

no thats normal the 2 taper bearings will allow movement till flange is tightened down and the play between the bearings is removed
