they are made from thin alloy so wont stop a thing!I've always assumed they were there to stop whatever you are towing from hitting the bodywork. Presumably for sharp turns/people who cannot reverse with a trailer hooked up.

original purpose was military. It was so they didn't have to stop in a fire fight to pick up men.
thought the military ones were more like the bumperettes than the standard bit o bent tube??
A bit of Googling suggests that the official part description is 'lifting handles'.
