Rear crossmember grab handles

I've always assumed they were there to stop whatever you are towing from hitting the bodywork. Presumably for sharp turns/people who cannot reverse with a trailer hooked up.

they are made from thin alloy so wont stop a thing!
 
I read somewhere that they were for assisting to get the landy out of the mud if stuck, think an assistant bounces the landy up and down with them.

or for tying yer horse:)
 
I reversed into the corner of a wall ermm.. I mean the wall jumped out on me. Anyhow the grab handles did bugger all. Didn't sustain any damage mind you but my rear light did punch a hole in the wall :D
 
I've got some lightweight bumperettes i'm thinking about fitting to the 110, depth looks good enough to protect the lights.
 
A bit of Googling suggests that the official part description is 'lifting handles'.
