Ok - have had a strange noise coming from the left rear brake on the missus' 01 TD4 for a while now, on braking a grating noise in time with the rotation of the wheel.

so - took the drum off - rusted to within an inch of its life, lots of crud and crap. gave it all a good clean out, better, but still there.

OK thinks I ;) , maybe drum is a bit fooked/oval.

easily sorted. Ordered new drums, pads, adjusters and spent a happy grubby morning today renewing both sides.

freed up the lower bar lug which was gummed up on both sides too, and put it all back together. nice and shiny.

adjusted the handbrake and off we go.

:eek: noise is still there. WTF? am I missing something - where could it be coming from? :doh:

Have you cleaned the rust and crud from the backplate as it could be that thats making the noise or its slighty bent and catching the drum.
 
i gave it a pretty good clean with brake cleaner but didn;t attack it with a wire brush or anything. where would the drum rub against?

bit confused as there's no noise when not braking. I did put copper grease on the 6 contact points on the back plate and where the two leaf springs connect on to the retaining pins.
 
The edge of the brake drum fits into the groove on the back plate.It fits in quite neatly so if there is any deformation in the back plate it will rub against the drum,as you apply the brakes there will be very slight deflection in the drum it self hence it will make a rubbing noise
 
looking at images shoes fitted differ from original shoes they seem to have a smaller or no leading and lagging edges this would cause juddering are they landy direct replacement
 
garfield - thanks, will give drum groove a good clean out, wire brush etc asap.

mystery, no - the new pads are on the left, the old ones look like they're smaller because they had partially disintegrated leaving lots of crud in the drum. not LR original (which are hard to find!) but are a direct allpart replacement.
 
take it image 3 new pads fitted image 2 right brake shoes old .the image 3 shows brakeshoes that have no leading or lagging edges

Check for sufficient clearance between handbrake cable and back of hub flange. Some have a clip on the handbrake strut to hook the cable under if not use a tie wrap around the cable and strut.
 
Thought so, the cable didn't appear to be under the clip in your first 'before' pic but couldn't tell for sure in the third image. Simple fix in the end but at least the noise prompted you to give the brakes a good service. :)
