Hi
10 years ago I bought a L/R 90 from a work colleague, a 1986 marque, professionally converted with a
Defender 90 200 TDI engine and a Range Rover Classic rear axle (disc brakes,no ABS). The rear axle leaked oil when I acquired her, so I fitted new oil seals and bearings (oil seals FTC4785). Here we are 10 years later, and she is leaking oil again, so I stripped her down etc.
Second time round, I am not sure I fitted the correct oil seals. Basically, the hub I have runs on 2 bearings with one oil seal, so that makes me think the axle is an up to and including a RRC June 1985 axle, however, it does not have a sleeve (571742). If I believe this then I should be using a RTC3508 or RTC3511 oil seal and not a FTC4785; this is where I am getting very frustrated. I note on some part number publications that there is a note concerning the sleeve, but as it refers to 'See Fiche', I am non the wiser. Maybe, the sleeve was only fitted on specific models?
I have pictures of the stub axle and hub attached.

Can somebody please tell me which oil seals I should be using, and which version of the axle I have?

its an earlier version, rtc3511 would be ok since you have no outer seal or a stub axle seal
Thats a relief, as that is what I ordered today. When I fit the seal, do you know whether it sits flush with the top of the inner hub, or should it be pushed down below the rim?
Just to confirm, you think the axle is a up to June 1985 version? Do you know what the mention of a sleeve is all about then?

it has a lip it pushes down to, sleeve is the part the oil seal runs on they were removable on early axles, later became part of the stub axle

Yes, I noted the lip today. That makes sense. So, I don't need to worry about the lack of a sleeve.
I can't locate a new mudshield 593610. Mine is OK although some of tabs have broken off. If I loctite the bolts, do you think that will be OK?
Finally, some reliable answers - Thank you.
