I have now got a 2004 Discovery TD5. 145K on the clock. Should I remap yes or no ?
What would the advantages be and what would the dis advantage be ? Would it put too much stress on the engine ?

Would I get better MPG and if I informed the insurance company would the nail my tail for a real hike in my insurance.

Thanks

Re-map it... End of discussion :)

The question should be yes or no to a bigger intercooler or upgraded turbo. Re-map, EGR delete, de-cat, center box delete should all be done without question on a TD5 if you can afford them.

You'll have a much more drive able Disco and slightly better fuel ecomony too...

...when the novelty of the extra power wears off and your right foot re-calibrated itself :)

Do it , mike from dynachip recently done mine ( 2001 td5 es auto) I wish I had done it years ago , the iprovement in performance is impresive and a recent trip with the caravan seen it avarage 26 mpg overall :)

What's the problem that you are trying to solve, by considering a re-map?

Mike at Dynachip re-mapped my old TD5 auto and what I wanted to solve was the abysmal hill climbing ability on motorways.

One re-map and she would fly up them.

Just wondering will there be better mpg and a bit more umph. I know the discovery is not a formula one racing car.

Thanks

I would go with the egr removel and the other stuff first and put a k&n panel filter in aswell

How would I know if my 2001 TD5 has had a remap or not? It seems lively enough and has a de-cat pipe (still has centre muffler). I suppose I'll have to find someone who's either got, or fully experienced a bog stock TD5. Oh, the EGR valve is still there, but I'm not sure if the pipe has been blanked.

Diff.

not sure but just make sure you go to some where good that nos what there doin.ive got a few mates that have had remaps and its made there car quicker but run funny sometimes on start up etc and flat spot aswell.

I'm down south and am interested in a remap also.

I'm trying to compare remap technology and it seems to be either remap the onboard ECU, or add a uC based small external enclosure - not sure where this connects?

Guessing the advantages of the eternal enclosure type is that it can simply revert to original mapping?

Looking at a local supplier:

TD5 Diesel Tuning Box - Landrover Discovery Td5 136 Bhp / 138 PS / 101 Kw

Also looking at All about Dynachip and

Alive Tuning - Land Rover Tuning Excellence

What are your experiences of the different types of tuning module (whether onbaord ECU remap or external unit) and perhaps of these companies?

Cheers
Lea

Hi Lea, let's first be clear about terminology: a re-map is something that happens to the cars' main ECU.

Add-on boxes such as Tuneit are not re-maps.

Good re-maps have the advantage of being bespoke; in other words the re-mapper will work around your needs and tune the car accordingly.

Add-on boxes are just that, they may or may not hit your needs.

Let me give you an example; Mike from Dynachip Tuning did my TD5 auto:

1. First he did a full electronic check of my vehicles engine and checked all sensor operations;

2. Then he re-mapped the engine;

3 After that we went for a test drive to analyse the changes electronically and driving wise, it was better but not quite enough so.............

4. Went back to my UK homebase and he worked further on the mapping then another test drive which this time produced the results I was after.

£225 later and we're done.

Example no. 2 - my mate put a Tuneit box on his Citroen Picasso diesel.

Results? More torque and more mpg. 5 mins to install or take off.

The choice Lea, is yours.

Good luck

David

Hi David

An interesting point, I naturally assumed the add-on box was amending the mapped values by squirting the flash memory inside? Maybe it's modifying the sensor values rather than actual remap?

I can certainly see the point of bespoke and this I suspect is a fundamental difference. I would prefer this topology especially if it can be proven via a rolling road or similar.

Food for thought.

Perhaps an EGR blank in the first instance ;-)

If the engine is remapped I believe you must inform the insurance company if I am correct.
The tuning chip being added is the same. Now I have heard of turbo's running really hot with the chip.

David did you get better MPG ????
I just stuck another £50 after roughly 200 miles the Discovery is a 2.5 and seems worse on juice than the 3.0 VW Tourage I had.
What MPG should I be getting as a rough figure ???

that is why you have a pyro gauge for the turbo. lets you know when to take your foot out of it:D and watch your temp gauge

ive just remapped my 04 td5, i have 2 words of advice, do. it. the re map made a difference but you could tell it was still 'wheezy' new cat/centre box less exhaust, egr blanking kit and a k+n panel filter and. . . . . its the best £600 ive spent, pulling from 1500rpm up hills in 3rd, putting your foot down at 70 in 5th and it actually accelerates, i know, it sounds to good to be true! makes it nice to drive as your not constantly changing gear as it runs out of huff up hills or trying to overtake. dont know about better fuel economy but i went to cornwall, 440 miles on £100 of diesel. that and the smile you'll get through tunnels with the windows down is worth it alone :) do it now!!!

What is your HP now
