Must admit, not especially surprised, lots of mud traps and Land Rover build quality assures me of returning to the earth is it's top priority.

I'd need to buy a welder....I just don't wanna go looking for it and end up with a very expensive, awkward project that I can't use. If I could patch that hole up and it lasts 4 years I'd be happy.

Did think of project rusty when I was sweeping up :D

Wow , just wow, hand on heart that’s the first one I’ve seen anywhere like that

Don’t think it will hurt to remove the plastic wheel arch liner to see if it’s anywhere else, wonder if I’m,'

@lynall , hope u didn’t mind me tagging, , u what do I think, have u seen anything this before plse, thks

Wonder if the disco has been used extensively getting a trailer out of salt water

Plse let us know how it goes and if ur goi;g to buy another one l

I am only kidding mate as this is your family joy riding mobile and not like mine, a long term hobby weld project :oops:

I would like to see you get it welded up and back out enjoying it rather than selling it off at a loss and then spending several times over on another that might just have the same or worse issues than this.

But you know how it goes just like me, sometimes better the devil you know and it'll be minimal outlay in repairs compared to potentially taking a hit in getting shot of this one, then spending similar to this one in buying someone else's cast off with potentially more expensive issues than the ones you have now.

Logic says get it welded up and get the rest of the vehicle checked over, repaired if needed and then Dinitrolled to within an inch of it's life.

Is that a D3?
I reckon they are going to rust much the same as the previous models, not the chassis as thats very thick steel, but the sills at the bottom where the joint is and the rear wheel arches.

I noticed the rubebr trim on the rear inner arch lip was swelling up (replaced 2 years ago and gone again) so bought some more and when I went to fit it noticed some surface rust on the rear arch inner lip thats normally under the rubber trim bit, so cleaned up kurust/painted and a huge dollop of grease all the way around which actually works really well as Ive used the same trick on some old rusty mercs, the grease sweats and stops and rust dead in its tracks.
 
Just catching up on this thread and i was about to comment on the underside pics saying it wanted a bit of a wire brush and some underseal but glad I read to the end first! ! :eek::eek: only 3 things that would do that to a chassis on that aged car, salt water, cow shit or its been used in a quarry, nowt else is a nasty.

Lad from bell engineering that fitted my VCU to my old Freelander said week before he'd had someone in for the same and the car had been used to launch a boat and he darent remove the old vcu as the chassis was so rotten behind the front doors the he'd never get the bolts back in

done that on the arches of my mondeo that have started to go and has worked a treat and with it being a black car its blended in nicely :D

Thks mate

Just taken back abit as all of the 100s of other D3 owners this is the first one I’ve seen like that

Won’t fit side steps on mine as I’ve always been worried them becoming a water trap

My chassis inside and out and underbody got 2 x coats of dinitrol

Another place as indeed we’ve spoken before is the wheel arch liner corners where leaves and mud can accumulate acting like a water trap

But just thrown me as indeed the only thing I can think of it’s been regularly dunked in salt water

It's getting patched with something and dunked in kurust, paint and grease in that order. Could be used in salt water or quarry as stuff I've scraped out from nooks and trannys, between brake flexis etc was quite sandy/silty
 
In a way (an not to crow about your misfortune Smithy) I'm glad ive seen this rust as I know where to look at them if/when i start to go down the D3/4 route

Hoep your able to get it sorted as its not the easiest place to fabricate

I think it's the exception to the rule mate but yeah, be thorough...

I'm hoping if I clean it back to good metal a mobile welder won't be too expensive. Mate at works got a number for someone

fingers crossed for ya chief, I'd give the body mount a good going over too not just round the hole, get it good and clean

If that done work out I was quoted £80 for a patch on my old D2 about the size of ya palm at infield 4x4 LR specialists near ashby de la zouch leicestershire, our head of legal dept used em for his old D3 and his newer D4 so i know there good on Discos
