hi all, thanks to all that gave me advice on this problem.
i have had it checked out now and the fault is the transfer box worn,so i am going to get some prices for fixing it,as at the same time i had it checked for its mot and all it needs is 1 plate welding on inner wing and 2 brake pipes over back axle, which i dont think is 2 bad for a 1992 2.5tdi.

1 question though is how hard to change the transfer box? and how to check if you have got a good one from a breakers.thanks chaps. mik

An absolute ****t unless you have ramps, engine hoist and at least one other pair of hands.

Strip it down and lubricate the transfer lever mechanism and check play and end float in the shafts/bearings, or go and see Allan at Legs, pay him 600 nicker and he'll fit a recon one in and take yer old one away...

thanks, mondo do you think it would be easier to change gearbox and transfer box in one go if i can get it cheap enough?

tis actually quite easy provided you have arms like popeye and use the long bolt method to remove it - no hoist needed

going rate fer tboxes is about £60 on ebay

Why spend all that money just because its making a "clonk".?Wait till it breaks then fix it.It could last for years like that.

£60 and a few hours work sounds a lot better than breaking down on the M6 one dark wet Sunday night, waiting for hours to get dragged off the motorway and then getting yer vehicle back home

or maybe you only use yours to take the kids to school in ?

Ohhhhhhhh!!

hahaha.

I have the same problem. output shaft and transfer gear both warn. I have just had the transfer gear replaced. Part cost £70 with bearings and seals. Clunk is a million times better. Hoping this will keep me going for another year before the output shaft also needs doing.
