range rover sport gone bang

Hi all,
I'm new on here but would appreciate views,advice,experiences re my land rover problem.
Here goes.
I bought a new uk supplied Range rover sport 2.7 tdi in july 2007,it has now just turned 60,000 miles and has full landrover service history.
The three year warranty has long since expired.
Yesterday the engine stopped,Stratstones landrover Swansea say that a piece of the alloy oil pump casting that the timing belt tensioner is bolted to has snapped off and the belt has jumped and all the valves are bent. Their repair quote is a new engine at £9000 (Yes that's right nine thousand pounds)
What are the chances or landrover sorting this out for me in that it would appear to be a design or quality problem?
The timing belt isn't due for replacement until 7 years or 105,000 miles.
The belt isn't broken as far as I know ,its the tensioner that has fallen off.

Hate to **** on your chips mate !!! but your got more chance of winning the lottery than getting land rover to own up to a design fault......on the other hand stranger things do happen...

so reading between the lines your expecting landrover to stump up £9000 for a new engine on a rr sport thats way out of warranty..

i had to continually annoy mitsubishi when my abs unit on the outlander failed 3 weeks out of warranty the bill was £2800 it had full dealer history but they said 1 week 3 weeks 3 years its still out of warranty.

in the end as a "gesture" of good will they sorted it out under warranty

so with yours being so far out of warranty i think you will have more luck finding rocking horse ****

Call Customer Care even if they tell you to do one what have you got to loose?
I would highlight that you the original owner, full LR Service history and that you would not expect this kind of catastrophic failure in five years time at 150,000 but certainly not now.

surely that casting is supposed to last for the lifetime of the vehicle. It's not something that gets regular wear. I would say that there are grounds to go back to LR.

I don't expect them to fit a new engine as I don't consider that it needs one (that's their idea)
I would like a new front casing to replace the failed one,and the bent valves replaced.
On the basis that a 43k vehicle should last more than four and a half years with regular servicing.

Has been suggested, and its apparently for them to prove its not their fault not me to prove that it is.
However we shall see.

Under uk law technically it is out of warranty under european law the responsibility lasts til 6 years. Not with landrover but with the retailer. You have to be able to prove that the product failed to meet the promised longevity of the product.

Seeing as you have a service history and appear to have done as you should you may have a case.

I know (a lot) more about Ducatis than Land Rovers, but this is the sort of issue where (on a Ducati) the manufacturer would supply parts as a gesture of goodwill. This isn't a moving part, or even one that's subject to huge stress. It's a casting that's let go and normally, I'd expect that casting to last the lifetime of the vehicle.

I have swapped an engine in an 07 with the same failure but this one had just had a belt change at a none franchise dealer.

You have rights its not about warrenty its about being fit for purpose ie it should last longer than 4 years check it out with a lawer if land rover are not willing to play ball they wont let it go to court as they know the outcome will be in you favour as long as you have the correct paper work ie.service history bla bla but you could still argue that a broken casting has nothing to do with service history dont let them take the **** many companys get away with this because people dont stand up they think ahh well no warrenty start by writing direct to land rover make sure every thing you send is recorded delivery and keep copys to forward to a lawer if it comes to that go to a casting company and have a expert give you an opinion in writing also get statments from garages and dealers who have looked at it

I reckon you stand a good chance with this, actually. My parents Grand Espace ate an engine outside of warranty, but because it had a full main dealer service history they paid a substantial amount towards the new engine - over 50% I think.

As you say though, it may not need a new engine so perhaps get a second opinion?

Other option is if you were thinking of changing up to a TDV8 any time soon, ask them to give you market rate for your broken TDV6 against a newer car and then leave it to them to sort the TDV6 out with a new engine and sell it on.

When I used to work for a main dealer (not LR) we would call customer services for someone in a similar situation as you and more often than not get a goodwill gesture, they normally pay a percentage but without a full main dealer service history they would get nothing

Same here, I worked as a technical service advisor for a BMW dealership and we often approached BMW for a goodwill claim on behalf of the customer and if they didn't cover the whole bill they'd quite often stump up a percentage, main things to remember:-

1, DON'T go into the dealership all guns blazin, the more sympathetic they are with you the more they will try!

2,You must have full LR service history.

3, Your chances get better if your dealer is also the supplying dealer.

4, If sucessful, take service advisor a little xmas pressie!

Its nothing to do with your chances its your right to have something fit for use if every other RR only lasted 4 years then fair play but since there are near 40 year old RRs on the road thats plenty to say that it is abnormal for yours to be unusable after 4

In reality, if only it was that simple!
From my experience peoples attitudes maked a BIG difference!

Oh yeh yeh i totally agree dont go in like a bear with a sore head but dont be fobbed off

Contact customer services at Gaydon. You are wasting your time talking to the Dealership. Phrases like 'Customer service' don't exist at the Dealerships.

The issue you've had isn't unusual though. Those TdV6 units are mass produced Euro rubbish like the TDCI in the Freelander2.
