hi everyone, i have just purchased a 4.6 hse with lpg, with several faults, (but it was cheap, so hoping it can be fixed with your help), firstly, lpg backfires, although ticks over fine, runs fine on petrol, single point type, thats all i know, any suggestions please?
also, gearbox fault comes on now and then, but still runs ok although a little jerky when changing gear. can be "cleared" by unplugging ecu then plugging it back in, but it comes back eventually.
also, centre console for windows and mirrors, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt, please help? thats all the switches either working or not at the same time.
and finally, remote central locking, again, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt, remote lights up, nothing happens, key code into drivers door, then it works again for a while, then stops again.
all help greatly appreciated, its a lovely car that i would like to keep, but will give up if i cant get it sorted.
thanks in adavance.

:welcome:to the :search:function it is a major part of P38 ownership. Seriously most if not all of you problems can be found using the search...

Okay, giving it a shot - not going to comment on the LPG as don't have one and don't know a thing about it. Next, gearbox. if it says there's a fault then maybe there is. Doh. Get the codes read and find out what it is. The Gearbox Fault message can sometimes show as a symptom of a weak battery so have your battery and alternator checked too. Next the console, remote, windows etc. BECM is misbehaving. Why.. well if the battery is weak it can happen. Also if earth connections somewhere are dodgy. Or if fuse box is faulty (known fault) or fuses / relays need replacing. Or, wait for it, if the BECM is fried.

Seriously bro, I get that you bought it cheap but what did you budget for repairs? did you consider worst case scenario costs (such as new gearbox and becm)? did you have the car checked by someone knowledgeable so that you would at least know what you were getting in to?

to be fair the only real way ive found for fixing the p38 is fire and lots of it ..!!!! pmsl sorry mate ,,,!

yes, budgeted for repairs, but need some advice on where to start, it starts and runs as it is, so i can drive it while reairing as i go, and the becm has been replaced with a new one, fully coded etc, and it changed nothing, the upside is that i have two of them now!
cheers for the advice though

Agree with a lot of the above get the battery checked it anything less than a full charge can cause all sorts of electrical problems.
My lpg has occasional backfires, usually when switching from petrol to gas on cold starting.
Find a good lpg fitter to test it all out and set it up then see if you can get yourself the software and lead for your system and you can normally save a copy of the ecu setup to use to reset the system in future.

Lpg needs a good spark, so new high quality HT leads and new s/plugs to start with. Are you sure its got any gas in it? The gauges are crap, as if its low it will back fire like mad as you try to accelerate. If all this is ok etc then as already said take it to a lpg guy to set it up, mine is single point and runs fine, only ever backfires when running out of gas but ive got used to the signs now so switch to petrol before it happens.
