Hi recently got a 2004 4.4 V8 L322. Its got a nice set of 20" OEM rims with Pirellis on. One rim has been damaged but still seems to run true. I think it looks great, however the tyres whilst still plenty legal enough, are getting worn. We live in a rural area so would like to get another set of inexpensive s/h rims with winter tyres and then refurb the originals . Looking for recommendations on brands and sizes please.

A higher profile tyre can only be a good thing in winter!
18" will give you that

Not just in winter. I live rurally and I wouldn't change my 18" wheels at anytime of year. 20" and above are for the non-potholed, tarmac, roads found in towns and cities. Personally I don't like the look, or the idea that an off-road vehicle would have them. It's a bit like beaters in stilettos. Shouldn't be done ;)

We run 2 sets OEM and another set for winter tyres actually ran them all last year as ride was nicer (on our roads). When M got the wheels we found that some touch callipers so beware. Can’t remember size will check when at home. But the ones we got are very close. So don’t just buy without trying.

Thirded, mine came on 20s and within 2 months something has started to go on the suspension (or rather, it's becoming more noticeable daily). Found some of the 18" hurricane looking wheels going cheap and snagged them last night. More rubber is definitely the way to go when rurality comes into play... Just to pick some good tyres now I've heard the cooper AT3s in 255/70/18 fit (just)...
