I'm looking to by a 1996 Range Rover 4.0SE Autobiography. The thing is i'm not sure if its a replica and i was wondering if anyone knew what would definatly tell me if the vehicle was a genuine autobiograpy?

landrover will tell you if it is an autobiography from the original reg document or the chassis number that is located on the window.
give there help line a call.

I have never heard of a 4 ltr autobiography I thought they were all 4.6s but then i own a diesel so what do i know.

Hi, I own a P38 Autobiography.

The best way to tell is under the bonnet. There should be a Land Rover Special Vehicle Plaque, stating it is an Autobiography and you can check the number with any dealer.

They do make a 4.0L as this is a custom vehicle its built as you want it. I believe the 4.0L are more special as there are less of them, plus a better faster top speed engine.

Check the interior, it should all be real wood covering the centre console and if there is no sat nav it should have a Autobiography badge embeded into the wood next to the clock. The badge on the rear should be a propper solid one not a flat one.

There are lts of ways to spot a fake but you know when its teh real deal.

where do you have to look for this special plaque? I can't say I have noticed it- but then again- i was looking for only a few secs!

It will be on the slam panel under the bonnet. So where the VIN number sticker is look along there and it will be there somewhere.

Yes thats correct, its to the right near the air filter, very easy to spot, but a quick call to land rover with the VIN will also confirm. Some also dont have any paint code stamped on as the brochure has custom options available.

The P38 Autobiography edition was available from 1999, so anything pre is suspect.

I have a 2008 Autobiography. There is a chrome plate on the door sill, drive and passanger side. Rear boot lid Badge. But really you only have to look at it to see a Autobiography. Johnny

Its a real good one too, 18" huricane alloys, full leather, dog guard, towbar!

Unless it's got a provable, ridiculously low mileage and a COMPLETE service history with things like air bags replaced just because of their age then I would say that it's far too much money.

Have seen and sold genuine 1996 Autobiography. Slam panel will have the contract number on it. I owned a 2000 4.0 Autobiography.
No Autobiography ever had Sat Nav, if it did its a Vogue. The Sat Nav console that holds the screen on a Vogue is fake wood, the A's are all genuine wood. The Only exception to this rule are the Overfinch's which have both nav and real wood - see my 2000 460s Overfinch for example has all of that and more.
The sad thing is the Vogues are a higher spec than the A's but nowhere near as nice to own.

Wasn't the Autobiography set up just a personalised customising service where you could have as little or as much as you wanted depending on how much you were willing to pay? If I remember from the brochures I have at home (away at work at the moment), that's all it really was. Maybe there was a minimum you had to pay to get this. Mine's a Vogue 50 but it's also an Autobiography as well. And you're quite right RRB, they did do them from 1996.

Someone will correct me I am sure but a Vogue 50 is a Vogue and not an Autobiography. They have a special plate between the front and rear drivers door showing the number of the car within the run. They were produced in 2 runs and in 2 specs. The 1st run of 100 was supposed to be all they did but due to demand they produced a further 35 were produced with lower spec. They had the carins nav system fitted and lots and lots of wood. Earlier ones had picnic tables and other goodies such as dvd screens and video player, later ones not. After run ended it was decided to opt for lower spec wood etc.

RRB- Yep, the Vogue 50 is a vogue but mine also has the Autobiography badge on the slam panel. As far as I know, they only made the run of 100. There were two versions - one was the Vogue 50 Carin which had the Sat Nav at a ridiculous £71,000 and the Vogue 50 without the Sat Nav at a slightly less ridiculous £69,000! Other than that, I thought they all came with the same spec such as the writing tables, video player and, as you say, lots and lots of wood. Who knows though.
